Honest Opinions Please. (2nd Gen Realted)

I have had many opportunitys to jump on the 2nd gen 2.7L. 1998's and 1999's.
1 problem. They are all at least 100k miles. I would say between 100k and 115k.
They are all about $4000. Good condition overall.
What I need to know is am I taking a HUGE chance by purchasing one with these miles? Is it worth it? Or should I stay away.
Please let me know.
Richie

Do you have any history on how this car was maintained?

Nope, no history. These cars may be fleet vehicles.

If you don't know the history, then I would be very leary of getting one and expecting it to run for several years. Just too much a risk of paying for an inadequately cared-for car. I'm sure you are aware of some members complaints about the 2.7 engine. Even though I don't buy into the 2.7 bashing, 100-115K miles is a lot for any car. Unless you have the desire/ability to be ready to rebuild the engine, then I would stay away. However, if engine (and probably transmission) replacement would not be a big deal to you, then I would say go for it! That is what I am doing. I have a 95 Intrepid ES (nicest car I have ever owned) and am in the process of fixing up a 98 (with a blown engine) I bought off EBay. The 1Gs are very nice cars, but the 2Gs are even better. The 2Gs ride more smoothly, the 2.7 engine is quieter and more fuel efficient, and the display and center console are laid out better.

Basically they are capable, but if you don't know what you are getting and cannot make the correct inspections... just stay away.

Are these SEs at NYC dealers? Which ones have you seen these at? I dunno... that 100k miles would be beater city miles. Might not be worth it.

I wouldn't buy an fleet vehicle with 100K miles even if it weren't a car known for engine/tranny problems.... actually if they are fleet vehicles the oil probably was changed regularly I'd be more worried about a $2500 tranny bill... and NYC been there and had to take back my Boston has the worst roads in the world statement

I am kind of confused. Not sure wether to jump on an Intrepid or a Lincoln Mark VIII. 95 or 96...
I really like both cars, but the power that V8 32 valve engine from the lincoln throws at you is just insane.

if you go for one... you can avoid 99% of the problems by doing a timing chain/oil pump/water pump change the first weekend you have it.

Get the Mark VIII if you are ok with rear drive.
