Back To Basics (A Bit Long)

Pretty much as the title states...

I sold the 2001 Intrepid to a lube tech / apprentice at work last month so he would have something decent to drive to work instead of his POS Rustang. BTW, he says he's really developed a liking to the Intrepid and, though he thought he was only buying a winter beater, has since changed his mind about Dodge products.

Anyway, I have re-purchased my third silver Intrepid from the insurance company that totaled it in November. I sold it to one of the body guys who bought it for his girlfriend almost two years ago. Unfortunately, they hit an office chair in the road at 70mph. And despite the very few cracks in the front fascia, the chair ripped through the condenser and radiator and lower support with apparent ease. I saw it on the lot one afternoon and recognized it as the car I had previously owned. When asked Mike, (The body guy), what was up he told me he was almost certain the insurance company was going to total it. And a few days later, they did. I asked Mike about buying the car back from the ins. co. and he agreed that it would be OK since he is the helpful type. He didn't even want to make a buck. He let me buy it for the ins. co. salvage price.

So, here I am with a silver SXT again. To be honest about the damage, I was surprised the car was totaled but, considering the age of it and how much it actually costs to replace and paint a fascia these days, plus the costs of radiator and condenser + other unseen items I begin to get the picture.

It took a number of my spare parts to fix and a dozen or so pop rivets with backing material to piece the fascia back in shape, (Pics coming!)

Today, I drove it home and was really impressed as to how it felt to drive an Intrepid with the 3.5HO as opposed to the 2004 300m with the same engine and trans but, all that extra heavy feel when driving around town. I'm still trying to find enough time to do the engine swap in the Special and hopefully, it will be a driving experience somewhere between the two I already have.

I did say this was back to basics earlier so now I have to deal with getting time and parts to get the current Intrepid back up to my liking on options. I miss the EVIC that the 2001 had but, am not sure if I have to replace the headliner to add the feature. I know there is bound to be a number of wiring changes I'll have to make to add it but, need info as to the headliner alterations.

I also miss the auto-temp but, can deal with the manual unit until I change out the evaporator coil which is also leaking now. Anyone with links they favor would be appreciated as to converting this over when the dash is removed and the HVAC box is opened.

A few other mods will be coming along as well. I just replaced the tires from a stock set I had which were almost new so, the rubber is excellent for now and though Mike's girlfriend managed to add 30k to the car, the brakes don't show it. Neither does the rest of the body for that matter.

While out of my hands, they had the windows tinted even darker than I had it before. I hope the cods don't disapprove too much.

List of future mods + fixes:

Flat Black foldaway power mirrors (Already bought)
HVAC upgrade to auto-temp
EVIC add and wiring (Sunroof present)
Auto Headlights add (Not sure how much of this is pre-wired. No sun sensor present)
Auto Stick complete add
100 mph tape and rivet delete on front fascia.

Here she is before the accident:

Again, it doesn't really look all that different except for the wheels and tint but, those pics will have to wait until I take them tomorrow.

Sounds like a nice project car. The before pictures make me really jealous, I wish my SXT still looked that way :(

What year this this SXT? '00, '01? (assuming since it's a 3.5L HO)

If so, pop out the black dash cover and look near the center, the car might have the wiring for the sun sensor. Same with the EVIC at the sunroof controls. Could be a simple plug an play time and cut out the dash cover for the sun sensor and add Auto headlight switch and sun sensor.

The auto-temp requires the upper dash harness swap, i.e. dash removal. If the EVAP core needs changing, that's the perfect time.

Can't see pics due to my work's firewall, I'll check her out tonight at home.

Seeing it's a late build I kinda doubt it has the EVIC wiring, but you never know!

For ATC a dash harness swap is needed. If you're interested I got the required harness's in my '02 Special parts car that needs to come apart. I also have a body harness to add the auto stick and other goodies

It's a 2003! Also, I do have a bad evap coil. Mike told me it was starting to poop out after about a month or so on a full charge of 134.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to try to keep this one as a d.d. and put it's projects as a spare time or back burner deal. I really want to get the Special running now that my winter is starting to see a distant finish. Soon I will be asked why the honeydoo projects are not being done.

I would most definitely be interested in that set of harnesses Steph. Only thing holding me back right now is instant cash. I've got a couple other cars to sell before I can do that. Hopefully, they will still be around when I get fat again. However, now that I think of it, the 2002 m that I'm parting out for the engine has a lightly crunched left side of the dash so, I should be golden for wiring in all respects.

Here's the way she looks today:

The kid that bought the red Intrepid from me didn't want the bra so, I just added it to this one to help detract from the cracks up front. Still, I will be on the hunt for a clean front fascia. I might even find one in the right color. The wheels have changed as well. I wasn't a big fan of the chrome spokes so, I swapped a set of new-ish tires on the standard alum rims and called it done.

Heck, she doesn't look bad at all. Being a '03, I highly doubt the wiring is there, when Daimler was part of Chrysler, they stripped MANY basic items from the LH series. I say you are at square one with these mods. Steph knows a ton of putting the goodies in the later models, I've only dealt with the pre-'01's.

Nice shop.

Of course, now that it is back on the road I've had like 5 people ask me about selling it. I would think that working at a dealership would be the place to find many people doing these fixxer jobs. Instead, I seem to find lots of folk who don't care much for the cars they fix.

When the LH first hit the streets I was wanting one. Now that they are plentiful as beaters and such, I still want a nice one. I just haven't lost the interest after all these years.

Looks like a sharp car for a project build!

As far as adding an EVIC/OTIS to it from the standard "map light", don't worry about it. Your headliner is fine, you just cut out the opening once the map light is removed, towards the windshield. Cut a bit, test fit, cut more if needed. That simple. Be advised you'll want to be careful and be ready to vacuum after, fiberglass hell. Wiring is pretty basic. You have three wires currently for all the lights, you'll need an additional five/six if memory serves me correctly, and the pig-tails for the BCM and the overhead side. Lots of harnesses on here people can offer or you can rip out of a yard car quickly.
