road rage

I nearly killed someone last nite. I am ok now but I was really mad before. I was driving home on a 4 lane highway. Traffic was slow. Maybe 30-40 mph avg. I was in the right lane and a beat up old ford aerostar van was next to me and started to come into my lane. I could have reached out the window and touched it. I blew my horn and they sorta backed off into their lane. Seemed kinda strange, their reaction. I kept going on, maybe another 1/2 mile or so and I slowly passed the van and as they got behind me they suddenly swerved behind me and hit me in the rear. Whaa? Smoke was coming out of my ears, what do you do now? They speed up and got in the lane next to me and were about 2-3 cars ahead of me. I kept driving and it did not take long to catch up to them. I decided to cut in front of them and stopped. Right in the left lane at 5pm. I hopped out of my car and walked back to their van to have a little talk. Turns out it was two young girls, maybe 16-17. I was basically yelling at them for 2-3 minutes. What the F did you do that for? Blah-blah-blah. I had noticed before they did not have a back license plate. I looked at the front of the van and they did not have a front plate either. I asked for an insurance card and they said they would pull over on the side of the road and we could exchange info. Ya right. I knew if I got back in the car that they would be gone. By this time I had calmed down a little and decided to get back in my car and pulled ahead. I got off at the next exit and of course they kept going. What was I supposed to do? Ram them off the road? Chase them down? They did not say a word as I yelled at them. They had completely blank expressions on their faces. It was like they were deaf, or drunk maybe. Turns out I really had no damage to my car. I think they hit my rear bumper. I thought they hit me in the door. That would have left a mark. What is this? Bad karma. Why do I have to deal with crap like this? I feel ok now. Its almost like a dream. A freaking idiot drives into my car on purpose. What the hell is the world coming too. This was not an accident. Road rage? Man.

Always stay at the scene of an accident.

You should have called the cops....they probably had taken the van for a joyride or something, you might have only been the first person they hit, the next people might be so fortunate.

Just glad you're ok man. I would have bitten their damned heads off. Age and gender not withstanding.

But, thats where a cell phone, even a pay as you go cel phone becomes a necessary, invaluable tool. I'd recommend it. That way you can call 911 while driving, and report two drunken teens in a van that is either stolen, or unlicensed. It's a van so it's slow as hell, just leisurely keep up to them and report where they are, make, model colour.

Exactly. Should have called the cops ASAP! I sure would have. Especially if they had no plates on the car. The cops would have loved that.

WTF! You should've wrote down their vin while you had them stopped. Or keep them stopped there until a cop showed up or flagged down another car, someone that might have a cell phone.

EDIT: What year car you drive?

FYI, I don't know how it is in Canada, but in the States, you don't even have to have a cell phone with service to call 911. Any phone that gets a signal can call 911 free of charge. I've done that before plenty of times with extra phones in my car that no longer have service.

Joe_mm [and all]

Here's a little advise: Hit the power switch on your computer, go to your local police station, and file a report.

What if you get a knock on your door next week from two undercover cops who arrest you for 2nd degree reckless endangerment and unlawful imprisonment?

How can this happen? You stated yourself you were at one time 2-3 car lengths behind them and it did not take long to catch up. You intentionally increased you rate of speed to persue them, possibly endangering your welfare, their welfare, and the welfare of the others on the road. You also stated you pulled over and stopped in FRONT of them. They can state you forced them to stop their car by intentionally blocking/cornering them in. You yelled at them for a few minutes, walked around the car looking for tags, and eventually drove off. Still yelling at them.

How do you know they didn't jot down your tags and go play crying game to an officer???
'He slammed on his brakes intentionally for no reason and I think I might have tapped his bumper. I wanted to do the right thing and wait for police but he got out of his car screaming and yelling. This continued for 2-3 minutes while he ran around our car like a crazed man. We were scared so we left the scene in search of help and safety from an officer of the law but he then he took off on his own"

The above statement is given under oath, with parental consent, and teenage tears in their eyes.

Why did they make the statement? Why are there tears in their eyes? Because they're GUILTY, SCARED, and they're parents are smart and made them do it.

99% of you are going to ask to have me banned from DI.NET.
The other 1% is going to advise me to write a novel when I get out of whatever mental institution I am in.

In my case: I persued someone for running me off the road, sending my wife and myself into a 180, and eventually into oncoming traffic. I finally got in front of them. I did so in my opinion cautiously, cause I'm a good driver. Never once screamed or gave them the finger [I respect my Wife too much to do that]. I simply wanted them to pull over and review the damage done to my Wife's Toyota Celica [$600 front end work]. I never got their tags. When I got out of our car that just so happened to in FRONT of their's, they took off, almost taking me out! I never got their tags. ...BUT THEY GOT OURS ALRIGHT!!

Knock knock knock came the officer's a week later. I won't bore you with the details but after about 8 months, 2 $$$LAWYERS$$$, and a desire not to go to jail for upward of 1 year, I stood my ground and choose not plea guilty to anything the DA offered. I was given a 6 month ACOD. ...I was a good-boy for 6 months and my case was dismissed, finger prints and report destroyed. My slate is CLEAN.

Next time: get out, ask if an Ambulance is necessary, and get back in your car. Keep your trap shut and wait for the cops. ...Always carry a cell and make sure you're the first to place the call.

BTW - I'm a 30 something 5'8" 200 lb LAN Systems Analyst that was wearing a suit / tie / dress shoes on his way home from work with his wife when this happened.

BTWx2 - Any Officers of the law with us? What would your advise be to our fellow board members? How should Joe have handled his situation?

BTWx3 - If you're ever arrested, SHUT THE FUCK UP!! Make sure your maranda rights are read to you and you understand them. Then continue to SHUT THE FUCK UP!! Anything you say CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN A COURT OF LAW. So SHUT THE FUCK UP!! Make your call, get bailed out, go deplete your bank accounts. Give your money to the best LAWYER your money will hire.

BTWx4 - I still think to this day the Woman who had me arrested had some type of relationship with an officer ...family, spouse, etc. Though the arresting officer befriended me, never read me my rights and I found out the hard way he used everything I said against me.

We had two incidents recently where kids with only learners permits took their parents cars out for a joyride with their friends.
In both cases fatalities resulted.

For starters, you don't need a pay-as-you-go or contract plan on your cell phone to call 911. All you need, is a charged battery.

2. The first thing I would have done, instead of getting in front of them, is to call the cops, mention that you have been involved in a hit-n-run with an unlicensed vehicle that is driving irratically. Describe to them the car you're driving, and the car their driving. Your direction, etc etc.

In no time at all, the shit will hit the fan.

I agree with the above advice, and add that you are lucky it was two teen age girls and not some crack heads with a loaded pistol, but maybe I've been reading too many California papers...
