Door Handle Replacement

My driver's door handle quit working. Extended warranty (www.warrantybynet.com) won't cover it and Dodge says you have to replace the WHOLE door panel, you can't replace just the handle. (Bad design, if that is the case!)

Does anyone know if this is true or can I find a replacement handle and fix the damn thing myself.

Right now, I'm feeling pretty ghetto having to roll down the window to open the door!

It should be simple to fix...there are about 7-8 screws on the door panel (two behind the speaker cover)...then just work your hand behind the door panel and kind of pry it off...there are some plastic pins behind the panel that kind of lock it in place but they should give with a slight pry...should not need any tools just your hand to pop the panel...make sure you get all the screws if the panel is not coming off. Once you get the panel off you will have to unplug 3-4 plugs and you can remove the entire panel. You should be able to see the problem with the handle. There is a small metal rod that connects the handle to the lock. I would bet either the rod came loose or the plastic piece that connects the two broke.

If the handle is broke I have a spare handle I could sell you for a few buck more than shipping.

Taking the handle off the door panel entails prying the metal pin holding the handle and spring straight up and off...look how the spring is positioned because you will need to get it in the same position when installing the new handle.

Here is a thread with some help:
https://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/...handle+install

There are a few other threads that have pictures and such but did not find them in a quick search. A lot of people on here have done this to install chrome handles...so if you need help just question away.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it actual is...I did all four of my doors including changing out all of the switches in about 2 hours. It is probably worth doing yourself as the dealer will charge you $$$ for a new door panel.

Tell your dealer to look up a TSB on these handles. You can replace the handle only and not the door panel. It actually replaces the whole handle and pocket. Most I have ordered were around $35.00 to $75.00. I can also check it out for you if you give me your VIN number. I will check it out and shoot you a part number and price.

From what the dealer told me, it is the clip that connects the handle to the rod.

Chicago, that'd be great if you had one we could work a deal on. Mine is black. You can contact me directly at [email protected].

Dave, if this don't work out, I'll have you check on getting me one.

I appreciate both your help!

Dorr Handle

I had the same problem and took it to the dealer. He told me that on Dec 27th Dodge is releasing the door handle as a part that can be ordered. About $64 for the handle and maybe 2 hours labor. Call your dealer. If they can't do it find another dealer.

Well, if you got one, and want to sell them or even give them away for the cost fo shipping, that sounds good to me. Email me at [email protected] and we can set it up.

If I don't end up trading my R/T in on a Magnum Hemi Wagon, then I'll look into getting a set of the chrome. Meanwhile, I'd just like to be able to get out of my door without having to roll the window down and reacch outside. LOL!!

What year is your car? From 93-97 the part # is GA33MD5 for the drivers door GA32MD5 for passenger. You can order from dealer online at this link.
http://www.worldparts.com/canandaiguachrysler/
If it is after 97 just put in your year and go to door related and part then door exterior handle and links, part # and price will come up. You don't have to buy it from there but copy the part # and do a search online at different dealers and get best price.
