Exclamation Wiring a valentine one to your intrepid

Has anyone wired a valentine one radar to their intrepid so you dont have to use the cigarette lighter? Do 1st gen intrepids (a 95' se) have negative ground electrical systems? It says in the install "select a wire, one thats off when the ignition is and has +12volts when its on. Are there any of these wires close to the mirror or the navigation unit? Just by what i have said does anyone know how hard this might be?, on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being the hardest. :dozeoff:

im saying it would be about a 4. If i were you, i would run a switch off the cigarette lighter wire similar to the way many people install neons inside their car. The cigarette lighter wire produces 12 volts and is simple enough to get to. I wouldnt even know what to use otherwise.

There are multiple wires you can use for this. However, I wouldn't tap any that are up around the rearview mirror area. Go down to the steering column area where all the ignition wires run. There is a very simple list of wires for first gens in the first gen How-To section of the site. From that list choose either an ignition or accessory wire. Make sure you adequately fuse it at the connection point.

BTW: your car is a negative ground electrical system and based on the fact you asked that question (no offense it's just a very, very newbie question) I'd rank this in the area of a 7 for you on your hardness scale...

you can use the fuse box next to your left knee (oops, 2nd gen)...im sure you know where it is, i believe the cigarette lighter has a fuse of it's own in there. I'd say it's about a 2 on the hardness scale, you just have to run a wire. Not to familiar with the first gens so i cant offer to much advice...definataly go to a fuse box instead of the cigarrete wire itself unless you have an inline fuse. Good luck man

I second that, go to the fuse box. On my Camaro (not sure about the treps) there is a space that sayes ING. That has power when the ignition is on and has no power when it is off.

What would really make this project fun is if you tried to incorperate the radar detector INSIDE the dash somehow so that it can't be removed (that way cops in Canada can't see it). That would be neat.

Locate the detector BEHIND the grill and add another (remote) on/off switch...

Not to mention the extreme gayness factor your putting off...

If you really wanna hide that wire pull off the driver side a-pillar, unscrew the driver side visor, give the headliner a little tug (held up by velcro) and slip that wire through...

i've been contemplating doing this for awhile, i have my radar detector mounted above the mirror, and was planning to tuck the wire into the headliner (as was mentioned above) and connect it to a circuit thats switched on with the car in the fuse panel in the drivers side door jam. good luck, let me know if you have any success!

You can tuck the wires behind the A pillar cover without pulling it off (it's very easy to break the clips pulling it off). Just pull the weather stripping off and you'll have plenty of room to tuck in the wire. And for accross the roof line, as said before the headliner is just velcro'd in so just give a gentle tug and you can easilly tuck the wires up under there...

Man, one of my many SPAM, Pop-Up, Privacy, Security blockers / Filters must be filtering that out... Would have been worth a look-see, if only once, just to see what you are talking about...

I can send you a PM with a link to the pic, but, it's outta my signature now.

Fortunatly, I will be getting my digital camera soon and I will have pics of my 'trep.

03SXTgangsta, I don't see how there's a gayness factor in that signature, I just thought it was funny (which is why it was my signature)
