Sad Need help with rough idle and code P0303

Got a 2000 intrepid with 82k miles ( the old lady works 40 miles away) and the thing has a rough idle and code P0303, misfire detected in cylinder #3. Dealer wants to sell me a new engine for $3600.00 bucks. They really want to bend me over. They said the had low compression on #3. I'll verify that later but for now how hard is it to swap from a 2.7 to a 3.5 in this thing. Or has anybody done a rebuild on a 2.7. Trying to get my options together.

I had the same problem a year ago, with my '96 Intrepid..the garage offered to sell me another car..I told him I'd just have someone else put an engine in for me.., while I was arranging to buy a JASPER engine..he called me back told me he switched plugs around and the problem moved also..so he replace the one plug and it ran fine..said there was no visible problem with the plug that's why he hadn't caught it,, he then said he rechecked the compression and it was fine..said he must not have had a good seal when he did it the first time....I'm so glad I didn't take his offer of a good deal on a new car...

instead of 3000 for a new engine it cost me around 85 for a plug and his labor....

if you really need a new engine,,check out a jasper rebuild, they come with a better warranty than a new engine...

I heard about the jasper engine, what's the price range compared to regular factory rebuilds. Man, moving plugs is the only thing I did'nt try yet. I already put in a new injecter, swapped the coil pack and all. I'm kickin my own a__ if that fixes it. But its got all new plugs so I'm not likely to be that lucky. Also found out later today that if I have'nt spent a bearing or destroyed a timing chain yet, the sludge problem may be sticking a valve. In that case I can redo the heads put this monster back together, pull the oil pan, give the insides a bath, switch to synthetic oil and live happily ever after. Can I get an amen from somebody? Or is this all a bad dream.....?

Well thats the next step for me if I can't get this thing fixed as is. Going to the hobby shop today to run the compression test. From what I remember about compression test, if wet and dry are about the same it normally means the valves. If wet is better than dry it usually means rings. Does that jive with what you know?

4800 bucks is better than a new car payment for four years.
