$1350 worth of weekend damages... I got off lucky.

I got $1350 worth of damages this weekend to the Intrepid... I got off easy.

Friday 12/19/03 at 10:00am, I was going down RT224E/RT277E (in Akron, OH). I was 2/10ths of a mile past the last exit (Main Street) and I was in the far left lane.

In front of me was a suped up Purple Honda 2 door Civic (very front) and a silver 4 door Honda Civic (directly in front of me)

In the far right lane was a gasoline tanker truck.

We were going at a good clip, I look down at my gauges and back up and see the purple Civic veer right but smash head on with a GMC Yukon that was going the wrong way. The Yukon lifted to the point where I could see the front bumper over the top of the silver Civic that was directly in front of me.

The silver Civic veered right and slid into a tanker truck... good thing she hit the cab.

While the 2 Civics and the Yukon were spinning. I stood on the brakes and veered right. I came within inches of the spinning Yukon and the spinning Purple Civic. I hear a loud noise (my car getting tapped & Debris flying and hitting my car) I get the car under control and pull over.

My Intrepid: $1350.00 damage, I'm fine
The tanker truck had little damage. Driver OK.
The silver Civic, smashed front end. Driver, shaken up and sore from the belt.
The Yukon, totaled. 78 year old driver in Critical Condition.
The purple Civic: 18 y/o passenger has a broken arm and was in shock. The 18 y/o driver died at the accident.

The 18 y/o driver went to Copley High School. He got done with classes early and was now on his Christmas break.

No one's sure why the 78 y/o man in the Yukon got going down the wrong way on the highway. The next exit up was over a mile away (Kelly Road by the Goodyear Airdock). I can't believe that he wouldn't have know something was wrong and went the wrong way for over a mile.

It's troubling to me that the kid passed away especially a week till Christmas.

Like I said... I got off lucky.

Wow. Thank god that you are ok.

But now lets see what comes out of this.

Elderly drivers will still drive.
Young drivers will have one more fatal accident in the statistics and thus the rates will continue going up.

Glad to hear you're OK, man. Sorry about the damage...

We have a divided 4-lane parkway that goes through several towns where my parents live, and every once in a while, you'll get some old fart taking a left turn onto the parkway who doesn't go over far enough to get on the right side of the road. They'll drive for a couple of miles, with people honking and flashing their lights at them, before they realize they're on the wrong side of the road.

When people get old like that, they just don't notice a lot of stuff -- even things you and I would find pretty obvious.

No... I think you're getting something mixed up...

There were 2 Honda Civics... One hit the Yukon... the 2nd hit a gasoline tanker truck. The one that hit the tanker truck hit the cab of the tanker, not the tank filled with fuel. The girl in that Civic survived.... If she would have hit the tanker, it could have been worse for everyone.

Thanks everyone, but the kid's family is who need the support and prayers... not me.

Speechless (or reply-less I guess). Very, Very sad, 18 years young.... Obviously glad to hear my forum friend is OK despite the very sad data that accompanied it.

Nope.... reread what Dodge intrepid teen wrote. From I read he's glad that a Honda whacked the tanker, just for being a honda.

i think what Dodge Intrepid Teen is saying is that hes glad the silver civic diddnt hit the tank of the tanker truck because if that was the case everyone probablly would have died in the explosion.

I hate this kind of situation. i hate to be cold when hearing about this sort of thing, but this is the exact reason why the elderly should have to retake a driving test every year to continue driving. So often do i have to swerve out of the way of an old woman or man who can bearly see over the steering wheel.

Hardwartz: im glad your ok, you are one lucky SOB, but im sure you know that
