How easy is it to remove window tint?

My Intrepid's previous owner (was from out of state) put really dark window tint in the rear and all four doors. It was done very professionally and is perfectly flat without any bubbles, streaks, or anything. I really love the look, and it's easier on my eyes while driving. But, here in Illinois it is against the law to have the front door windows tinted. I see no reason to remove it (other than the cops not wanting to approach a car with all the windows tinted), but I also don't want to get a bunch of expensive tickets. So, my question is how easy to remove this stuff? Use a razor blade? Will it just peal off as if it was just stuck on with static electricity? Will there be any residue? Thanks for any suggestions/comments.

most tint can be easily removed with an alcohol based cleaner and a razor blade, just soak the window with the cleaner, and scrape it off

The local guy that installs a lot of it says; spray ammonia based windex on the film, then wrap it with a garbage bag and leave it overnight. It peels off very easily the next day.

to add to what the guys said above, any ammonia based cleaning solvent would do fine at neutralizing the adhesize in window tint. The purpose of the plastic bag is to make the window sweat and peal up a little more easily. The razor idea would work but would just be a little harder and you'd still have to deal with removing the adhesive. Good luck...

Depending on how dark the tint is, I'd leave it on. I have 35% on my front windows, and I have not gotten messed with yet. I've had it on the car about 2 months now.
It all depends on the car I suppose. I had the same tint on my '79 Cutlass and I got pulled over ALL the time. The Intrepid blends in with other cars I guess.
I'd leave it on until you get a ticket, then decide if you want to take it off.

if you get pulled over for something, open your front window all the way immediately. If the cop can't see you as he approaches, he's more likely to get pissed and ticket you for the tint

Drive around with the window open all the way in the summer-time (that should cover you half the year), and partially open in the winter time (make sure the heat is cranked all the way). Plus, if you ever do get pulled over, open both front windows right away (as 'trepdude said). Now, is there any way to make the front-passenger window a "1-touch down" window?

don't the police have a spray that they spray on your tint if they ask you to take it off on point. Some of the cops i'm from give you the choice of taking it off on sight, or get a ticket, i think it's like an $80 cite.

I say leave it on, and when they come to the car have the windows down already.

kinda funny the topic turned this way. i got pulled over about 2 months ago, the copw walked up to the car, looked at me and said " you knw that tint is illegal, correct?" i responded respectfully, yes sir, he then said " i just wanted to let you know" and walked away. it SUCKS driving around in the snow with the windows rolled down all the time. if you have that fear, then just remove the tint.

I like cops like those. Guys who realize that, there's no sense busting your ass over something silly and small like this, when he could he spending more time busting the drunk drivers and red-light runners etc etc etc.

I think what cops can do, is give you the $80 fine (or however much it is), and say that if you bring the car in sometime in the next 3 days, with the tint removed, then, he'll rip up the ticket (happenned to my friend with a burnt out tail light)

tint is usually a ticket added onto you doing something else
I only have three friends, out of tons of people i know that have gotten tickets for tints, and usually it's becuase they got something else, and this was just a way for the cop to add it on.

I have one friend who did get pulled over just for tints, mirror tint all the way around on his jetta with a bodykit, and his car screams for attention.

Oh yea, and i thought cops needed at least an inch or so on your front two windows to ticket you. Not sure though

He could ask you to roll up the windows about an inch or so. BTW, how do they check if it's legal or not?
