98' Engine

My dad and i both have the same car . His is a 98. Mine a 99.
both have the 2.7 engine. i have put synthetic oil in mine since new and he has put regular oil. Now his engine is making a ticking noise when driving at a steady speed (50-70kph).
Is this the engine about to poop-out or something else.
I believe he let his engine get really low on oil as well even though he won't admit it!

I'm guessing if he puts more oil in the engine, the "ticking" goes away, right?

Maybe it should be torn down, and a preventionary rebuild done with a high volume oil pump?
