Auto Dimming Rear View into a '97 Ram

I picked up an extra Auto Dimming Rear View mirror from the Pick-n-Pull last time I was there for $5 for my 'trep (the price was right). I noticed that the mounts are pretty much universal now and was thinking that it would be a nice upgrade to the rear view in my truck, a '97 Ram ext. cab 4x4.

With the stock mirror, when I pull the toggle back towards me to lighten the mirror up again, I always end up moving the mirror.

Wiring...

On a trep, the power comes from the park lamp circuit, ground is ground, and then there is a 3rd wire to disable the auto-dimming when you are backing up.

Now for the questions... Does anyone know if there is a wire in the cab that is connected to the backup light circuit on a '97 Ram???

I just got done with making up the wiring harness here at work and will be looking at installing this sometime in the near future here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Kyle

I never hook up the reverse Inhibit. It will work with not being hooked up.

I checked the diagram for the Intrepid dimming mirror wiring and it shows the inhibit wire connected to a switch on the transmission. Whether this is the transmission range sensor or another reverse switch I don't know. The switch connects to a hot wire on the junction block though so it might not matter what wire the inhibit is connected to as long as its 12 volt and positive. So you might just be able to run it off the backup light power lead.

Personally I agree with IceShaver511. I wouldn't connect it, just to much extra trouble. And if you ever need to turn it off while backing up you can just hit the button on the mirror.

That feature largely comes into play if you back out of a garage into daylight, it tends to obscure the view momentarily. If that's not an issue I'd forget it.
If you do want to connect it you should be able to find the switch that turns on the back up lamps and use a connection. Got access to a service manual?

This is true, but I was just thinking for down the road if we ever get rid of the thing that it may annoy someone. I will definitely be hooking up the other wires sometime in the near future. I will be hooking the main power up to the park lights so that the rear view will be on only with the park/headlights on. This way, if I were to be backing out of a garage during the day, I just leave the park/headlights off.

I know where the switch is for the backup lights (on the side of the transmission)... But if I can help it I would like all of my splices to be inside the cab of the truck. Don't have to worry about corrosion on anything that I do that way...

I have a Haynes manual, but have found them to be lacking in some of the wiring diagrams. I should invest in a FSM for it at some point.

Thanks for your help and insite!

dont worry about if you sell the thing, just make sure to sell it as is, and im not sure many people will care that the reverse inhibit isn't hooked up, because they probably wont notice anyway
