Intrepid Tag-along

If this is so off topic and needs to be moved, please do (i didnt' know where else to post it).

To anyone that is knowledgable about motorcycles....

I've wanted a motorcycle every since I've known they existed. I want to know you guys, and girls opinon, on the make and model, and how much i should spend on my first bike. I am very comfortable with machines once i've gained experience (a few hours) in using them. Although, i've only driven a manual car about 4 times, and was pretty successful (only one or two stalls, but alot of jerking). There's this guy that works with me, that's rides this bad azz bike, and he said he is willing to teach me. I need some opinions on how i should pursue this. and since everyone has been helpful in my questions about my trep, i figured that you could be just as helpful in me finding a tag-along for it too.

Questions:
How much should i spend?
New or used?
Do i need more clutch experience in a car?
Make and model suggestions?

Most of your questions are more personal preference questions. The one about needing more experience with a manual car, I don't think you do. I learned how to ride a dirt bike long before I learned how to drive a manual. I think that as long as you understand the mechanicals of the clutch system, you should be ok.

Out of curiosity, how old are you?

I went to a Kawasaki dealer yesterday, and now i'm so excited, i can't wait....

Since you're just beginning, make sure you get a bike that you can handle. Too many people I know go out and get more bike than they can deal with and either :
a. Give up riding and park it in the garage
b. Get seriously injured because of their lack of experience.

Get something you can ride comfortably. That "comfort" level comes from time in the saddle. You make pick it up quickly, but that doesn't make you an instant professional, if you know what I mean. Nothing is more valuable than experience on the road when it comes to bikes. And...there's nothing quite like the feel of riding on the open road!

I have been riding dirt bikes long before driving also so don't worry about that....I have had a 1981 Honda CBF 900 86,000 miles timing chain broke 2 years ago so now I have a 2003 40th anniv Sizuki Volusia, what a wonderfull bike and a $6k new you cant beat it she has the classic cruiser lines, 800cc and very comfy. Give one a try...

oh yea had to edit...take a motorcycle traing course...I just took one last year since my wife wanted company and I really wish I had taken it sooner...you are never too old to learn new safety techniques

Since you are a beginner, the questions are easy to answer:

Buy used. You can pick up a great starter bike (500-600cc or less) for a couple grand, and sell it for nearly the same when you are ready to move up.

If you are interested in sport bikes, they take more than a couple hours to master. Take your time, and don't do any stupid bullshit to get yourself hurt.

Also, contact your local DMV about a Motorcycle Saftey course. It is well worth it, and the insurance savings are nice to boot.

As for a bike, since you are interested in Kawasaki, I would recommend a used Ninja 250R or 500R. Any bigger as a beginner, you are just asking for trouble.

(A brand new 250R is $3,000 and a 500R is $4,799. Used is much cheaper.)

Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki have similar bikes.

Oh yeah, expect to drop the bike, or lay it down a couple times too.

I'm thinking a 600cc is a good starter bike, and i heard that the R6 handles good too.....

Any other sportsbikes that are good starters.

The R6 is not a starter bike.

New 600s and above are too much for beginners. Go small and work your way up. Don't buy a big displacement bike just cause its cool. That is the fastest way to either injure yourself severely, be a squid, or end up selling the bike because it is too much to handle.

Another bike I would recommend is the Suzuki GS500F. Look on www.cycletrader.com for bikes 500cc and smaller. You'll get a good selection.

Fools in cars (they ALL are) can't/won't
SEE YOU!!
Follow this advice and you'll only get one or two
crashes...

Do not get a sport bike. The insurance alone will hurt you in the pocket big time because of your age. My advice to you is to stay away from Crotch Rockets until you learn how to really ride and handle a bike. Look into a nice naked bike. Like the Suzuki's. And make sure to save enough money for gear. The bike is only as good as the gear you wear when riding it. Safety comes first on a bike....no matter what!

Insurance on a sporty is not really any higher than any other type of bike. Its mostly dependant on engine size. I have priced out insurance on a 1,200cc cruiser and a 1,000cc sportbike, and there was not enough difference in insurance price to make a big deal about.

I'm going to have to disagree on the type of bike. If you want a sportbike, the best way to learn how to ride is on a sportbike.

All the bikes take a different style. You can't become proficient on a naked or a standard or a cruiser and expect to jump on a sport and be just as good. You'll have all the basics and none of the finer nuiances. You'll have to take time and "relearn" some things. The same is true going from a sport to any of the other styles.

INTREPER is right about the gear. Get a good DOT helmet, nice thick boots, gloves as well as pants and jacket that you'll be comfortable in.

Don't be one of the posers that ride around in shorts, t-shirt and sandals.

I have had an interest in motorcycle riding for several years. Last year I pulled the trigger and bought a bike. However, before doing so I enrolled in several motorcycle classes, as these classes have bikes you can ride during the class. I would recommend the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) courses. They have beginning courses which, I feel, are excellent. I had also taken the The Rider's Edge course the HD offers. Both beginer course and they supply the bikes. The MSF use 250cc street bikes and the HD Rider's Edge use the Buell Blast. Anyway, the content is roughly the same but for me it was the best way to get into this sport. They both offer classroom and driving range experience. I tended to stay away from friends to teach me to ride. Also, your state may have a riders guide for further information regarding specific rules and laws for your state.

I had purchased a new bike, an HD Sporster 883, and love it. It is solid heavy bike with a low center of gravity. It is easy to control. I did have forward controls put on to suit my preference to have my feet a bit forward for overall sitting comfort and controls, braking and shifting. I did look at a number of used bikes as well and decided to buy new. The Sportster has an MSRP just over $6000.00USD.

Anyway, as other posts has described, safety first. Get the proper riding gear and budget for it. Stay a visible as possible. Some car drivers do tend to not see you. I did add some additional lighting, back and front and this seems to have helped. Along with wearing more reflective gear.

BTW, I have not driven a manual transmission vechicle in many, many years, so I did stay off the street for practicing my clutch and shifting.
