chrysler doesn't make a 4.3L engine.

where are you getting that from?

The V6 that is in the durango is a 3.7L. there is also a 4.7L V8, and a 5.7L hemi.

nothing that is 4.3.....

well.. the 4.7 is a V8... it has powered the Dakota for some time (since 2000 i think).

It is a solid engine, has some spunk, decent fuel economy...

but it ain't no hemi.

the 3.7 is the 4.7's little cousin. same engine design, sans 2 cylenders. 3.7 has a lot of torque and power for a v6 truck engine.

but it ain't no hemi.

Unless fuel economy is major concern, go with the hemi.

HEMI!!! I've driven a 4.7L Dakota and thought it was pretty good, especially in the low-end torque area. Still, the HEMI has more HP, torque, and well ... it's a HEMI!!!

Get the latest (March 2004) edition of Popular Hot Rodding. On Page 38 - 43 is a awesome article on the 5.7L Hemi engine. Lots of pics, how it works, dual spark plugs, details, details, details. Very Cool.

Go with the 5.7 Hemi. The 4.7 is good in the lighter Dakota`s. I drove one a 4.7 in a Ram 1500 and it was a dog.

When my Intrepid died I bought a used 4dr Dakota with 4.7L and 5spd. I have the 4.7L in my Durango and it moves it pretty good. But it really moves it in the 2WD Dakota! With a few basic mods this truck would easily be pulling upper 14's in the quarter mile. As it is, I think it is about as fast as a quad cab 2WD HEMI but not quite as fast as a regular cab short bed HEMI.

So what is the differance in price 6 cyl vs. Hemi? I wouldn't want the 6 cyl, but I can see them overpricing the Hemi cuz it's a Hemi.

The standard engine is the 4.7L V8 with optional 3.7L V6 (though I doubt you'd have to pay extra for less CI) and the optional 5.7L HEMI. The HEMI option is really pretty cheap. On the pickups, it's only about a $800 option. You can't buy 100 horses in upgrades for $800! Go with the HEMI!

Those things are big. I don't think I'd want a v-6 in the new Durango. The 4.7 is a sweet engine but I'd love to have a hemi.

I would have to say with past experiances, and liabillity issues, I say 4.3 is the best motor built. I've had them run over 300,000 miles without even as much as a oil leak.
