Question Need advice on a flat tire

Luckily it isn't my tire that is flat but my roomate's tire here at school. He has a screw in his right rear tire. I think the hole is small enough so that a garage might be able to patch it. My question is how good is it to patch a tire? I know that you should never patch a sidewall; which doesn't apply in this case anyway because the screw is in the nice thick tread.

Any knowledge and advice is welcome and thanks in advance.

Cheap repair is a plug from the outside. Proper repair is a patch from the inside. If you don't mind a wheel balance problem there is always "Slime". Just my $0.02.

I've had numerous tires plugged or patched and never had any problems with them. I've even autox'd on a repaired tire before. If the tire is in good condition, I'd say go for a repair...

Plug or patch works just fine. Unless you have enough money to keep going out and buy a new tire everytime you get a flat, in which case I'll open a tire store near where your school ;)

definitley use the stuff called "slime" i had my tire go completely flat and since i couldnt get it off the car i put slime in it, and it runs like brand new (this happendend in september) it says it good fr like 3 years too. and it cost like 8 bux

The only problem with "Slime" and similar products is it has been known to "eat" or corrode wheels. A buddy of mine used on one of his tires. About a year or so later he couldn't keep air in the tire. He came to find out the leak was around the bead. After 4 trips to the tire shop to get it fixed they finally pulled the tire off and found all this crap around the bead. They told him it would never seal in the condition the wheel was in. So he spent about 4 hours that night scraping and grinding the crap out of his wheel so the bead of his tire would seal again...

Yeah, that spare in a can stuff is only made to get you home. Right after you use it, you should take it in to a tire shop and have them take off the tire, patch it, and take all the crap out.


I had my tire professionally patched in the late summer. It was a large screw. It has yet to leak any air.

Thanks for all the advice.

We took his car over to Walmart this morning. They said it would cost $6.50 to patch, probably without labor, and take 2 hours because they were busy. We'll pick it up later today and find out the final cost then, shouldn't be too much... I'll tell you all how it turns out.

$6.50 to patch?! I have to sell my house and move off Long Island.

I tend to go w/the $2.99 PepBoys plug solution. Comes in a neat kit you can stash in the trunk. You do it yourself in 5-6 mins.

I would refrain from any 'goo' stuff. Throws off the wheel balance and creates a nasty mess. We don't want messy wheels when we go to sell them on eBay do we? Not to mention the possiblity of an explosion when removing the tire. ...but thats where Walmart comes back into the picture.

My right rear tire is a magnet for nails, and now has three of those pep-boy style plugs in it. I alway carry a package in my care just for such an emergency, as well as a cigarette lighter air compressor.

The fix-a-flat will also eat away the rubber lining of the tire. This is a bad thing. I would never use this. A spare and a trip to have a patch/plug combo is always the best method (besides 2 new tires). The combo has the plug which you pull through the hole attached to a patch which further covers the hole. I have repaired many tires (100's) at the shop and seen many plugs leak, many patches leak, but never a combo. Of course, none of my patches returned, but other peoples did. =) Anyway the next wuestion is why 2 tires. If you replace 1 the tires will not be even side to side, which can cause a pull and further uneven tire wear. You did choose wisely to take it in and have them patch. I just hope they have a clue. Keep an eye on it for a while, first sign of loss take it back.

Update: My roomate got his car back yesterday afternoon. To patch the tire at Walmart it cost $6.89. I think this is the cheepest service you can possibly have done to a car, I can't think of anything else you can have fixed for cheaper. You can easily pay more for spark plugs than $6.89! Thanks for all the advice. I'll get to see how the patch holds till Sunday cause he takes the PA turnpike half an hour to go home on weekends. Not a long test, but then again that isn't a slow half hour either.

$6.89? Damn, I'm driving my flat to the states from now on. A simple plug around here runs up to $30 CAN (although, these are at places to be know for taking your money)

I know I use mine here in Utah with all the construction going on! There's always crap in the road waiting for my tires!!
