Bad Toyota ...

We get so many guys on here who just SWEAR by Japanese reliability, especially Toyota's, that I had to relate this story from a guy at work. He owns a 2001 Corolla w/34,000 miles on it.

A month ago, everything was working fine. Last week, the check engine light comes on and the engine starts ticking. So, he starts checking around the engine bay and discovers that the oil is like 1.5 qts. low. He fills the oil, drives for another two weeks, and the engine starts ticking, again. Again, the car is 1.5 qts. low on oil. This time, he checks around for leaks - nothing. Apparently the car is burning oil ... So, into the dealer it goes (it's still under warranty).

The Toyota dealer keeps the car, finally scopes the engine on day two and finds oil in one of the cylinders. They also discover a minor water leak at the water pump. They don't fix the water pump leak, they add something to the oil and tell him they're going to do an engine road test. They give him back the car and tell him to come back when he's put 500 miles on the car. They also tell him NOT to open the hood or it voids the test. Huh??? They let him drive out of there with a leaky water pump and an engine burning oil and then don't want him to open the hood??? On top of that, he had to DEMAND a receipt for the work, which they didn't want to give him because there was no charge!

What is up with this? Apparently, not all Toyota's are alike.

As a dealer technician, I can tell you that part isn't bogus. They didn't want him to add oil. When somebody states they have an excessive oil consumption problem, the manufacturer wants all kinds of documentation to prove it, or they won't pay for it. The technician will measure the amount of oil in the car, have the customer drive it a certain distance (with Mercedes-Benz, it's 1000 miles), and then measure the oil it takes to bring the oil back to the previous level. If the engine was indeed burning oil excessively, I'm sure they'd want to rebuild or replace the engine, in which case it wouldn't make sense to replace a leaky water pump on an engine that may be torn apart anyways.
All manufacturers make a bad car here and there, it just happens sometimes, even to the ones with the best reputations. That's why its called a "warranty" and not a "guarantee"

Thanks for the info - I'm sure he'll feel a little better when I tell him. None of us had ever heard of such a thing. The funny part was they didn't tell him not to add oil (which would have made sense) they told him, "Don't open the hood." I guess that was the part he didn't understand (nor me). I mean, we're not talking about some kid here - this guy's over 50 ...

Well, I know that and YOU know that ... but there are some people on this site that apparently DON'T know that.
