Angry Gas Gauge

I have a 2001 Intrepid, and last week, the fuel gauge started dancing from full to empty, and then the warning light and ding would come on, then it would go back to full. It's been doing it periodically since. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the "dance"...it just happens. It's getting increasingly annoying...as I can't stand the "ding" from the dashboard. Thank goodness for the stereo system I had installed last summer!!! Any suggestions?

Definitely the sending unit. Many of us have been there and done that. I ended up replacing the whole fuel pump. Pain in the buttocks.

It's a device in the fuel tank that sends a signal to your guage to show how much fuel is left in the tank.

Most dealers will tell you it has to have a fuel pump module...but if the mileage is less than 50K, you can get by with just the sending unit. It can be replaced in under 2 hours.

My 94 Intrepid has an access port in the trunk. I'm not sure about the newer Intrepids.

Look in the trunk, in the middle against the chair back. You should be able to feel 4 studs sticking up under the carpet. They are spaced about 8" apart.
