Sad 95 Intrepid broke head!

Has anyone had or heard of a head breaking on a 95 3.3L Intrepid? I was driving home the other night and heard a knocking, like a lifter was bad. The engine started hesitating and the knocking got worse. The next day I took it to my mechanic who discovered that the first head on the passenger side had broken off - like something had sheared it clean off. He said in all his years of working on cars, he'd never seen anything like it before. Anyone ever experienced such a thing? Please send your replies directly to me as I don't know when I'll be able to check the forum again. THANKS!!

"One problem - relatively common but still rare overall - with the 3.3 and 3.8 is rocker arm pedestal breakage. John "Auto Tech" wrote "I honestly don't know of any way to prevent it from happening but I do know of a repair that can be done 'on the car' and it works without replacing the head:"

Was it the head itself that broke, or did a head bolt break?
