Winter Tire Sizes

I am planning on buying a new set of winter tires and steelie rims for my car. My summer sizes are 225/60R16.

My question is what is the ideal size of rim/tire I should look for for winter tires? We will get a lot of snow and freezing rain up here. I was thinking of upsizing to 17" tires but then read somewhere that for winter traction it is a good idea to downsize, to 15".

I did a search and saw some members running 215/50R16 or 225/60R16 winter sizes.

Is there an ideal size for my car or what?

I have a set of 225/60 R16 with 4 rims (black rims) for sale. I bought those last fall and I won't need them anymore because I'm storing my car. The brand is Uniroyal and there's 10-11/32 of thread life left. They are good tires, never had a problem with them. I paid that set 700$ will let it go for 500$. I still have the bill for the warranty. I bought those @ Costco. Pm me if you are interested.

Check my thread:winter tires for sale

tirerack says go with one size narrower and a half series larger. so 215/65R16. about the same OD. you don't want shorter sidewalls. you want a little taller tire so the tire can flex more when its cold out. nothing wrong with getting the same size as original. you could even try a 70 series 15" tire but the cost is pretty much the same. than your brake calipers might hit. probably not. also, any winter tire should run circles around any A/S tire. get a blizzak or goodyear ultragrip. softer compound.

I am looking at Blizzak's, but they are expensive. I've also seen Kumho KW19 winter tires for under 100 bucks each and they seem pretty decent.

I am running 225/60/16 Dunlop Graspic snow tires

Love them too, incredible grip with minimal loss of road feel and minimal noise

Hey Joe -

I am looking at the Graspics here. From what I've read, they perform well in snow and ice but are shit on dry pavement. How have they been for you when the weather warms up during winter?

I also notice they are only Q speed rated. Not that I'm a speed demon, but if the weather is nice and the roads are clear, I can see myself passing 160kmh on the highway during the winter.

Which model of Graspics do you use?

EDIT - The bad reviews were for the DS-1 or 2's. The sport M2 or M3 have great reviews and a better speed rating.

I've found a great deal on 2 different sets of used tires and need help to determine if either set will my car:

set 1)
225/60r16 on rims that were on a Subaru WRX

I know the tire size is ok, but will that rim fit my car?

set 2)
205/55r16 on rims that were on a 1997 monte carlo

Would these tires fit or are they too small in width? How about the rims?

I'm researching around myself but hope someone may be able to answer for me

Ok, the Subaru has a bolt pattern of 5x100. No good. The Monte Carlo has a pattern of 5x115, which is close to the Intrepid's 5x114.

Anyone know if those 5x115 rims would fit? If so, how about the 205/55r16 tires on those rims?
