Strut Pricing/Install Questions

The struts on my car are starting to go. Time for 4 new ones. I wanted to get the KYB's, or at least some Monroe Reflex's.

Sweet Jesus! My mechanic quoted me $1100 CDN for the KYB's installed and $1000 for the Monroe's. Hell, even a set of cheapo struts would be $800 installed.

1) For those who have looked, where is the best online price for those shocks? I've looked at Tirerack, but the KYB's there come close to what I am paying for them here thru my mechanic($700 CDN)

For those Canadians here, have any of you bought those struts locally in Canada for a good price? Where?

2) Why is the price so high for even shitty cheapo shocks and install? This is a cash deal I have with my mechanic, so I am getting a good discount already, but $800-1100 is so high. Hell, I paid $400 to change the shocks on my truck. What makes the install on an Intrepid so hard?

3) For those with no skills like myself, what have you paid(in CDN or US $$) to have all 4 struts replaced?

I don't know if you are getting a good deal or not but I can explain some of the unexpected cost.

Alot of it's labour. The entire front strut must be removed so the spring can be transfered to your new strut. More than 2 bolts like an old shock absorber. Tie rods, bearing plate and alignment all part of struts on a fwd strut change.
Rear is almost as complicated.
Use caution on the rear, pinch bolts are often seized and abs wiring is prone to damage during rear strut removal.

I've heard it's a lot of labour, but wow, that's a lot of money

Got another quote for the KYB's.

$980 all installed. Better than $1100 but still more than I was hoping to pay. Gonna have to do it though, the ride is getting pretty rough.

for the first gen tire rack has the struts for $57/each. But then you should probably change the mounts and the spring seats. I just changed my rear struts last week and it cost me $211 for KYB struts and mounts from Tirerack and $15 for the spring seats. And it was free to rent the spring compressor from autozone.

Definitely change the top mounts

I changed the top mounts ONLY. almost the same labor but there was nothing wrong with the struts. the mounts tend to separate and rattle making the front end sound like junk.

I would put Monroe Reflex's on my gen 1 but I can't find them. Are they available for the older treps???

Monroe part #931937 & 931938 for the fronts - $83 ea. The Sensa-trac (part #71939 @ $64) is the best Monroe I can find for the rear ...
