Ha,ha...umm.... no "they" don't and they did not 5 years ago either. At either one of the two Recruit Depots: Parris Island or San Diego.
I did not have much fun 15 years ago when I went through "boot camp" AND I can say with a fair degree of certainty that there were not an awful lot of kids in my plts over the last 3 1/2 years that had much "fun" either. They learned a lot about morals, courage, self esteem, teamwork, pride and discipline (things that keep people alive in combat) but nothing about fun. And I would think Americans would not want there to be much "fun" at recruit training....there is not a whole lot of "fun" going on in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. And this is probably being way too picky but the m in Marine is ALWAYS capitalized...Thanks.

Actually, one of the first things you will do once you get there is have the opportunity to call whoever you want, collect, and for about 10 seconds reading off a script that basically says "I have arrived safely". Once you are established in training it is up to your Senior Drill Instructor if you call home or not and how often. I used to let my rcts call near the end of training (11-12 week) using phonecards that I had them buy. If there was a Holiday like X-mas they would call home too. Some SDI's never let their plts call home but the Sunday before Graduation is Rct liberty so there is at least the second time you could call someone other than your recruiter. Oh and BTW I lost count, probably in my second plt, of all the kids with some version of ... "I'm going in as a MP..... which has been guaranteed and is all in writing. "8 out of 10 times this is true but..... It all goes off of needs of the Marine Corps.
