Going to meet the challenge.....

Well, I just thought I'd let you guys know that I won't be around on the boards for about 13 weeks after today. Since I'm leaving for Marine boot camp in San Diego later today. Yes I'm very nervous but at the same time
I'm so excited I can't sit still. Yes also for the curious, I'm going in as a MP..... which has been guaranteed and is all in writing.

I hope you all wish me the best of luck, and I'll be back in about 13 weeks. And after that I'll BE A Marine finally....

No way, not in the Marines man. You don't even get phone calls, except one to call your recruiter to tell them you're going to graduate. But yes, I'll have fun while I'm there.

Ha,ha...umm.... no "they" don't and they did not 5 years ago either. At either one of the two Recruit Depots: Parris Island or San Diego.

I did not have much fun 15 years ago when I went through "boot camp" AND I can say with a fair degree of certainty that there were not an awful lot of kids in my plts over the last 3 1/2 years that had much "fun" either. They learned a lot about morals, courage, self esteem, teamwork, pride and discipline (things that keep people alive in combat) but nothing about fun. And I would think Americans would not want there to be much "fun" at recruit training....there is not a whole lot of "fun" going on in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. And this is probably being way too picky but the m in Marine is ALWAYS capitalized...Thanks.

Actually, one of the first things you will do once you get there is have the opportunity to call whoever you want, collect, and for about 10 seconds reading off a script that basically says "I have arrived safely". Once you are established in training it is up to your Senior Drill Instructor if you call home or not and how often. I used to let my rcts call near the end of training (11-12 week) using phonecards that I had them buy. If there was a Holiday like X-mas they would call home too. Some SDI's never let their plts call home but the Sunday before Graduation is Rct liberty so there is at least the second time you could call someone other than your recruiter. Oh and BTW I lost count, probably in my second plt, of all the kids with some version of ... "I'm going in as a MP..... which has been guaranteed and is all in writing. "8 out of 10 times this is true but..... It all goes off of needs of the Marine Corps.

I know it's not all fun and games, in fact far from it. But I've had some of my friends go through and several of them thought there were times when it was fun and enjoyable. But I'm going to try and make the most out of it and have as much fun as possible while still learning and so forth.

My earlier post was by no means directed at you. If you were/are leaving today I would think you would be gone already. If not... and you see this here is some advice. I just finished up a tour on the Drill Field and was a Green belt DI, SDI, SerGysgt and finished as a Company First Sgt so I know a little about what goes on down there. The first few weeks will be rough, it is suppsed to be and everything has a reason. Some will say that the DI's play games. Again, everything has a reason. The hard fact is that there is a war going on (actually two: Iraq and Afganistan) and the harder it is the more prepared you will be to survive in combat. Remember that because there will be times when it gets really rough and you will have doubts on why you decided to do this. Remember many thousands before you have done the same thing. Teamwork is the key and stay away from the troublemakers. There is opportunities for fun but those times are few and far between and I wouldn't try to have fun around anyone wearing a green belt if I were you. The best advice I can give you is that at first nothing you or anyone else does will be right. After the first few weeks you will know what is right and wrong; always do what is right and you will be fine. Even though it may be cold out drink lots of water, lots of dehydration and heat cases year round because for some reason rcts refuse to drink water, and wash your hands as often as possible, use the handsanitizer before you go in the chowhall. Lots of kids get sick down there. Be as fast as you can and as loud as you can in EVERYTHING you do, even when your throat hurts real bad around Saturday evening after you get "picked" up by your actual DI's. The first week you will just be babysat through medical screenings, dental and inprocessing. You will not meet your actual Di's until Sat the 4th. I could write pages and in the end could not convey in words what it is realy like. When you graduate send me a PM and let me know who your SDI was, what Bn and Company you were in, etc. Good luck.

yeap it is a game when the difference between life and death when in a place like Iraq is that when someone yells "get down" that person/people immediately gets down or stops and looks for who said "get down" and gets shot between the eyes. That directly corelates into the "games" that are played in the 13 weeks of the boot camp we are talking about here where the whole plt lives in an open squadbay not the six week boot camp where everyone lives in individual dorm rooms...... But boy them sure are some nice planes you all keep nicely polished Ravin

Rentapig, how old are you and are you a reservist? I replied to one of your posts once (something about nazi's and you had a recon pic where the dukes of hazard one is now) and I believe the admins must have deleted it immediately. You make us look like fools buddy and I am not just referring to the post in this thread...............you sure must have paid attention to those core values classes. You display them nicely in nearly every post of yours I have ever read.

You take what someone posts online as what they are like in person? Oh brother, get off your high horse.
