Ohio Highway Patrol

Well today when my wife was coming home from work she watched a State Trooper swing a u-turn and she knew she was gonna get stopped, which she did! She said the Trooper was nervous to walk up on the vehicle due to the Platinum tint, lol, which I completely understand! Anyways, she got stopped for no front license plate (Ohio State Law) and he also told her the tint was WAY to dark, lol (another Ohio State Law)! So he gave her a warning on both and sent her on her way.

Now what I wanna know is, since I'm definitely not removing my expensive tint due to a Trooper on a road she is hardly ever on, what happens if he stops her again? Or another Trooper for that matter? Do the tickets start adding up with higher $$$, or what can they actually do?

I've had a cop make me take a razor (he supplied it the bastard) and made me peel my tint off right there! I could have taken a $57 ticket for the tint but he would have also writen me up for speeding, no seatbelt, and any other damn thing he could find!
The tint ticket itself isn't that much and I don't think they can keep track of how many warnings you have gotten, so you can get off several times (this is from personal experince in Canada, not sure about the states)

dude... ever here of lindale ? well i got pulled over doing 101 in a 60. got a ticket 3 days later same place get pulled over again. 74 in a 60. he let me slide. think if he new i had that ticket he would have ? he ran the plates and everything.

my point is. ohios police suck. there computers blow and their cars do too. sound like there gonna blow up at redline in 1st

but i would leave the tint. i know cops personally that will take there key and scratch it just to make you fix it.

but the lisc plate law pisses me off. just put a plate on it... you just stand out when you dont have it. because hell you never see it. only way to get away with it is to have s.c. plates or anyother state that does not require a front plate.

also whats the tint law in ohio ? 10% i wana go 5% but im scared. of this very reason.

Somewhere there is a link to a site that has the tint laws for all 50 states. But you'll have to search for it - I didn't save it under favs ... :(

I think it's really up to the discretion of the officer whether or not to give you a ticket for it. I would leave it because that tint was expensive. If you start getting tickets for it, then maybe it's time to change it out.

As for the plates -- i hate that law, its the same here in IL. A carwash tore my front plate off back in august, and i left it off because the front end of the car looks so much better without it. i ran without the front plate until just last week. I never got pulled over for it, but i was just tired of being nervous every time i saw a cop on the road. Just didn't feel like being hasseled over the dumb front plate.

If its really a warning like you said. Then I don't beleive you have to do anything. However, if that car gets pulled over again, no matter the driver...they will have a record of the warning, and probably right you a "fix-it" ticket.

I have heard of the cops around here carring razor blades in order to take tint off. Well in my town the ricers have mirror tint which is VERY illegal in Iowa. I think they are just fed up about it.

However, I also notice the cops only going after the bit more "flashy" cars. IE if my car and a riced out honda were driving on the same road and he had the same tint I did...he would be more likely to get pulled over.

I think your safe if you got the warning, but if Ohio is like Iowa, you have to have the vechical inspected after the removal of the tint. That Iowa law is new...havn't heard of that happening to anyone yet. Much more harsh tint laws are going into effect after some cop in Des Moines got shot at from behind a back window and injured him seriously.

If you get pulled over, always, ALWAYS roll down your window as soon as you stop. Don't make the cop nervous and cautious to approach the car. If you make them feel comfortable, the less chances there is of getting a ticket.

I've always had very dark tints on my vehicles and only once in 14 years was I warned about it.

As a side note, thank god a judge here in Ontario threw out our tint law recently. There is now no law about shades of tints.

I've never experienced it myself, but I think LA area HP expects you to have both hands out the window before they approach the car. It's been a while since I heard that though!

They won't do shit unkut, don't worry about either thing. Just be ready to pay the tickets if you get them, I'm pretty sure you can just mail them in and not have to show anything about proving that the tint is removed. As for the plates I would say just follow the law but you use your car as a show car and the license plate law is virtually never enforced in Ohio.

By the way, the front windows in Ohio have to be 50% which is really gay. It wasn't until just recently that even your big ass rear window could be darker than 50%. Isn't that just retarded

My car won't ever be done because I'm insane. That is all.

In MO there aren't any rules about any of the back windows! Can't have those limos running around with just anybody looking in, can you ...?!?

In Alberta, Canada, anything BEHIND the driver can be up to limo (5% light transmittance) tint, but the front drivers' and passengers windows can not have any aftermarket film at all. I think my '04 has a very light factory tint on the front sides, and that's OK. I know some RCMP's and one reason they give for this rule up here is that the plastic tinting film actually holds the window together, so it wouldn't shatter (which is good that you won't get hit by the safety glass), but not so good if you had to break a window to get out. I guess the other factor, though not as big a deal up here it seems, is the being able to see in thing.

All that said, I also know that some cops will hassle you just because, depending on the day they're having. If you respect them, they'll (usually) be fair with you.

I think the way the laws work is that if you can legally seat 7 passengers or something like that then you can have darker tint. Think about all the minivans and SUVs that come tinted, those are definately darker than 50%. I would have to check on how the laws are worded to give you a fully correct answer, but I never really cared. All I knew was that I couldn't legally have darker tint.

if you have both outside mirrors you can go 5%on all back windows drivers and pass windows go 50% and you have to take into that factory has some tint so that has to be added in also
oh also don't shoot the messenger
