Wheel Weights

I took my Trep in for tire rotation and balance to the Dodge dealer where I bought the car, and they put new weights on the wheels that didn't sit in the inside groove of the rim. I told them I thought they were the incorrect weights because the factory weights matched the groove. So they re-did it, telling me they used the correct weights and also did me a favor and put the weights on the inside so they wouldn't show. That seemed strange to me since a long time ago, proper balancing required splitting the weight mass and putting half inside and half outside for proper correction. But, with the new machines, maybe the machine tells the tech how to do the split.
Anyway, they still used the same crappy weights on the inside. I am concerned they may fly off eventually.
What is everyone's opinion of these weights?
Should I contact the factory? I am not going back to this dealer again. I don't trust them.

They look insubstantial to me. Also, what kind of machine does your shop use for balancing?

You can balance tires using just the inside weight, (called static balance) but it is not as good as weight on bolth sides (called dynamic balance). For static the machine calculates where to put the inside weight so that the tire is out the same each side but 180 degrees from each other. So if the tire is 2oz out on the outside - 0oz on the inside, the best balance possible will have the tire out 4oz!

Those are the wrong weights... you can see the MC stamped on them, (plus they look ready to fly off!) Wheel weights for a 98-03 intrepid are designated LHS type, and should have a LH stamped on them. A good shop should have a gauge to check this. I'd get your tires Dynamic balanced, as it is much better. if you don't want an outside weight you can use tape-on wieghts inside the rim.

As far as the type of weight, I'm not sure what's correct and what's not. But, modern tire balancing machines will tell the operator not only how much weight and where to place it, but also on which side they should place the weight. Whenever I bring my car in for anything, I always go out in the shop and watch them and ask questions. And clearly from the machine readings in which any idiot can decipher, it does tell you which side (inside or outside) to place the weight as well.

I like to do this where ever I go with the car as well, but I've had many places tell me I cant be on the shop floor for saftey reasons :(

when I learned wheel balancing in school the weights were hammered on with the special took and took the shape of the edge.

I use stick-on weights, and frequent rotation/balance. I haven't had the standard hammered-on edge weights for years, and no marks on the edges of my wheels either! I hate the way they scratch the clear coat or chrome!!

I dropped the car off and didn't see the work being done. The dealer has signs all over that no one is allowed in the shop anyway.
What ticked me off the most was that when they re-did the work, the service advisor said they put the "correct weights" on that time. He was thinking I was too stupid or lazy to look under the car to see the weights on the inside.
I'm going to the local Goodyear shop this weekend to get the work re-done with stick-on weights. I have had good luck with them in the past.

They go inside the rim (not in the tire!). The only bad thing about tape-on's is if you have very 'open' style rims you can see this big ugly strip of weights.... factory rims you can't notice though.

First of all, those aren't the right weights, it's suppose to say LH on them. I work at Costco, in the tire center and we have all the weights for the right cars, including stick-ons, Now, I have that on my Intrepid because if you put that on the outside, it damages the rims and doesn't look good.(like stated before) I did that also on my dad's RT (2002) because it took off some of the chrome and now it's rusted (it's a lease though) And there's no problems at all, you just need to keep them balance (at every rotation or oil change) Alot of new cars now come factory like that because of the style of the wheels (Mazda 3, Maxima, BMW) So, all the machines are (or should be good to do it) We have like 5-6 options on our machines at work so we can do it no problem......go there if it's not to busy, here we just got our first snowstorm (15 inches) and it's hell now. Everybody waits at the last minute to install their winter tires.

what I usually do at the shop I work at when I balance my tires is use stick ones for one side and hammer ones for the other. i set the machine up so that if you are looking at the top of the tire, the left edge is your inside and the right edge(front of rim) is the outside. for the inside i use hammer on weights. for the outside i use sticky weights that go on the flat lip on the inside of the rim. the machine has illustrations telling you exactly where to put the weights on. i believe the machine we have is made by hunter
