OTIS and MPG

I was watching Myth busters and they ran two SUV's one with the AC on and one with the windows down to see which one ran out of gas first. The computer said that with the AC on the car got better gas mileage. So I was wondering how exactly does the BCM/OTIS calculate MPG. The computer on Myth busters used airflow sensors plugged into the engine.

That experiment bothered me, it just didn't seem scientific for my taste.

at first they said A/C was better than than on that test on the end they were going slower so the windows down was better.

I believe drag from the wind is exponential with speed so going that little bit faster the first time really made the difference.

O well...

Also they used SUV's, not exactly aerodynamic vehicles but oh well. Does the OTIS and BCM use things like O2 sensors and such to calculate MPG or how is it done.

Some people do. It's a rough guess from a calculation of odometer distance divided by the fuel used as indicated by the gas gauge. Ever notice how DTE fluctuates, especially near empty? It follows the analog sender in the tank.
I noticed the test was done at 45 mph, so wind resistance would have a very minor effect on drag. At a far more typical 60-70 mph it would triple or more. Also, the guy with the A/C cranked mentioned how cold he was. Well of course it uses more energy set for an unrealistic low temp, compared to a reasonable 70-75
