Question Decoding Vehicle Order Number

I don't know if the idea has ever crossed anyone's mind here, but for s**ts and giggles, I've been wondering which number off the assembly line my 'Trep is. By that I mean, is it the 27th Intrepid built, the 1,508th Intrepid built, etc.; it's information that serious car collectors like to have if they own a classic car - so what the hell, why can't I know that about my car too, eh?

Yes, I can use the search function for the DI.net boards, but it turned up nothing related to VONs. Following that I did some looking around on the 'net and in my Haynes manual regarding VINs and such, and came across the VON, or vehicle order number, which for first-gen Intrepids at least is found on a sticker on the underside of the hood. I finally got a lead at a site decoding VINs for Superbirds - it described this number as the indicator of at which point in the line the car rolled out the plant. In order to tell, they say, you need to know what the VON is for the first Superbird, which happened to be J97000 as I recall. They were assigned sequentially after that, so that someone with a Plymouth Superbird with a VON of J97852 would have the 853rd such car built.

What I'm asking is if anyone can tell me if this is still true of the vehicle order number for our cars, or maybe Chrysler products in general. And if so, then, does anyone reading this know or have an idea how to find the VON of the first Intrepid ever built?

Good question. In the second generation R/T section... the unanswered question has been the same thing that you are trying to find out. The R/T owners have had no such luck.

This has been talked about before a little but I can only find one reference to it ... https://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/...ad.php?t=31950

YB Normyl might know all about it since he works for DC but he doesn't frequent the boards as much as he used to ... :(

Bugger... Well, thanks for the link and info guys; we'll just have to wait and see if anyone else has a clue I guess, save for inundating DC with a mail campaign demanding such VIN or VON info...

The thoroughly impractical but sure-fire way to figure it out would be to have all 'Trep owners in the world post the last six digits of their VIN, their VON, and see who has the lowest. And then find all the same from all the 'Treps sitting in dealer lots, repo lots, junkyards, etc., to be sure we had the lowest numbers, and you could count from there... If, as I'm assuming, at least VONs still work that way... Yeeeah, that's the ticket...
