Sad Weird Engine sounds! Please Help!!

I was driving my 2000 intrepid 2.7 when the engine start making this clicking sound. it was driving any different but it sound really bad. The higher the rpms the faster the clicking. When i got home i went to listen to it to see where it was coming from and it was coming from inside the engine. I turn 16 next week and this was supposed to be my first car so I hope its not that serious. You can email me if you want to, [email protected]. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Don't start it till someone can tell you what it is. My old S-10 started making a clanking sound (it was a thrown rod). My dad and I decided to drive it into the shop to get an engine swap and she siezed solid halfway there....

Sad

btw, it has 148,000 miles on it and the oil light has been going on and off for while and now it is staying on. i checked the oil and it isnt low. it needs a new air filter and an oil change it that would have anything to do with it. thanks.

Might just be chain noise from low oil pressure, but it depends on how loud it is.

Switch to synthetic oil if you haven't already. Mobil 1 is the best locally obtainable option for most people.

There is a TSB for a flickering oil light. But it can also signify low oil pressure (thats what it's there for). These engines are known for having the oiling system sludge up and kill the engine in the process. Synthetic helps prevent it.

I would also check your oil sending unit...if you havn't replaced it already theres a good bet that its probably bad if not going bad soon.

If I did have to get a new engine, how much would it end up costing?

depends on where you get it and what you get with it. believe it or not a 3.2 will be cheaper then a 2.7 because of the demand on the 2.7. at my yard i have a chance at getting a 3.5HO from an r/t for $700 with engine harness and all. im still debating on getting it because i dont know much about engine swaps yet and the fact that it came out of an 02 will mean i need to switch like ALL electronics in my car. unless i can find a 99-01 engine harness.

either way i would say about $1000 for a good non 2.7 (at least around here), also need to plan on finding someone to do it for you.

Don't want to jump to the conclusion that you need a new engine yet, get it looked at first. It might not be that bad.

Rough prices for a 2.7 would be about 10 grand for a remanufactured one installed or about 5 grand for a used one installed. You should be able to get both of these cheaper depending on the shop installing it. The non 2.7 route is great but you might get charged 'custom' install charges if you do not do it yourself or find someone who has done it before.

Some of you are giving this poor kid a heart attack!! Like Hypnos said there is indeed a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the flickering oil light at idle/low rpm's. Have the oil pressure sending unit replaced... the ticking... could very well be the lifters ticking. Nothing to be alarmed about. Your 2.7 has almost 150,000 miles on it. I would be very proud of that fact. Even with the stock motor.

When I first start the engine it makes quiet clicking noise and i think that is the rockers, but the noise it is making now is really loud.

Yes, I had quiet ticking that got louder-before the cam chain stretched and chewed teeth off the water pump. Putting money into that engine for an exploratory is like an
old Okie phrase-"...pissing in the wind!" Lots of low milage engines out there for under
$1000. This site will assist greatly in getting your ride up and running.
Pst-- Swapping an engine isn't rocket science!! I'll be glad to help!!
