Transmission/Engine Compatibility

I am by no means a mechanic, but I'd have to say I know more than those guys that come here asking for "break pads" and "duel exhaust." However, the coordination between engine and transmission isn't really something I understand; perhaps you guys can help me out.

Our engine bay (1st gen) is huge - I probably have enough room for a 305, or even a 350 (iffy). The only thing I can think of that would prevent me from doing an engine swap is the transmission. What engines will "bolt up" to the 1st gen stock trans? What numbers do I need to go by (if any) to judge this?

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

To see if an engine will fit a transmission, you have to study and mesure the bellhousing bolt patern and diameter. I don't know of any v8 that will even come close to bolting up to our transmission.

Some of the v8 transmissions are pretty small. But most of them are RWD...

Maybe the Hemi from a 300C?
Depends on the bolt pattern for the "new" 3.5L engine ...

Trans on the hemi LX is not the same as the trans on the 3.5L LX.

I didn't know - I pretty sure the 3.5L (300 Limited) was available with the 5-speed AWD option, too. Do they make two different trannys for that - one for the Hemi and one for the 3.5L? Or maybe just two different bell housings ...

If you want to V8 and RWD a FWD car, you're probably better off mounting the car body on a frame that is already RWD.

You'll have to do a fair bit of work to get the steering wheel to connect to a 'foreign' system, but everything else is cables and hoses.

305 and 350 are physically the exact same size.

As far as I know the only 6 engines that will bolt up to that transmission are the 3.3, 3.5 (1st gen), 2.7, 3.2, 3.5 (2nd gen) and Maybe the 3.8
