transmission help 93 dynasty

hey guys

not sure where to put this so ill put it here and if someone thinks it goes someplace else hopefully they will move it for me.

its my buddies 93 dodge dynasty 3.0 V6. right now what its doing is in park and neutral it runs fine but when you drop it in any gear is dies. it clunks and dies. when it first started, in a matter of 3 hours it got to this point .from driving , to not shifting unless manually shifted, to dying when put in gear. . suppsoedly the tranny was rebuilt year and half ago but it looks like hell so i dunno what it is. also the tranny fluid is motor oil color. he added half a quart of dexron 3 but shouldnt it be red or a dark brown red. its more of a caramel color ??? a buddy thinks the torque converter is locked up and killing the engine. anyone have some ideas? how to disconnect the converter. is it worth changing the fluid?? the car runs good but is the typical 14 year old chrysler so it may not be worht fixin. thanks guys

wow. brown tranny fluid is definitely not good. if it is the same as the 93 trep's tranny, you want to use ATF 4 and definitely not dexron./mercon. The tranny fluid should be bright red.

I would start by having the fluid flushed and then the filter changed. run it for a bit, and change teh fluid and filter again. sounds like there is a ton of crap in it.

As for dying when put into gear, that could be the TCC solenoid. find it, and disconnect it and see what happens.

your buddy might end up having to get a new tranny again from the sounds of things. I would just go drop a junkyard tranny in it but put a NEW torque converter in it. This is probably what killed the rebuilt, the old torque converter was used and had junk from the original dead tranny.

that's my take on it.

damn, too bad you weren't closer, I have a tranny from a 91 Spirit that's the same, in good condition, the motor is junk, I'd seel it to you, but, shipping wouldn't be worth it
