Big problem need help fast

OK so I have a big problem . I have 97 trep sport. Today I went to go start it and it ran fine. Well i got back and i went in and took a shower and not 10 minutes later the car would not start. Kinda acting like the battery was dead, no. I tried to jump it and still nothing. so I rule out the battery and alternator. Then the starter started clicking. Im sure most of you have heard this noise before. Well my car has recently been doing this. this is the first time for it not to start. It usually starts up real slow. like it will almost start, then it will slow and then it will come back and start up. but today, i didnt start at all. then about 6 hours later it starts up fine and runs fine. anybody know what the problem might be. Im guessing starter, but idk

sounds right to me, you might have a dead spot on your starter

i had that problem at 2 different times and the first time it was the starter but the second time the battery cables didn't have a good clean connection to the battery, so cleaning the post and cables ends might be worth checking, because it took me a little to figure it out when it happened to me a 2nd time a few months later.

i know a clicking sound when trying to start the car is a battery issue. I would would expect dieing cells inside the battery that dont have enough juice to crank the car to start it.

have the battery tested by autozone or someplace that will test the battery.

check the cables. make sure there is no corrosion. your cable might have gone bad and corroded internally. (had this happen to the ex wifes POS pontiac when we were married. it gave the same symptoms you described. replacing the positive battery cable fixed it, and it had corrosion all inside the cable, but you could not tell until you stripped the insulation back.)

If it does it again, have someone tap on the starter w/ a screwdriver while you try to crank it. possibly the solenoid is sticking..

Hope this helps

AJ

I'm going to go ahead and get battery cables, jsut incase. But what size should I use? I saw that there was different guages and lengths. And should I get negative and positive cables?

Could be:
Bad ground or ground strap
Bad starter
Bad Battery

I would have battery checked out
Look for bad cables or rotton parts
When it doesn't start, you can smack the starter with a hammer. (not to hard) it may help get going.

I had to replace the starter in my '96 and it was doing this exact same thing.

yeah went up to advance auto parts today, it was the battery and the starter. so i got new of both, also got some new cables, and some anti corrosion stuff. that top bolt and that starter is a bitch to get out. it took me forever cause i left most of my tools at a buddy's house and i had wrenches that was it. but yeah, putting everything back tomorrow.

So good news, I got the starter, new battery, and new cables installed and everything works great. The new starter sounds nothing like the factory starter. Sounds kinda gay actually, but it runs, so. Spent about 300 all together, but it was worth it to keep the Trep running.
