Gold leaf

Okay, I have a basic understanding on how to work with this stuff. I have seen it used on shows like American choppers, pimp my truck (stupid show about pimping semi trucks) and other misc. shows here and there. The one part I cannot seem to find an answer to is this...if I were to use some of this on the exterior of the car, like a door or whatever, do you clear coat on top of it? Considering the fact that gold does tarnish, with a clear coat on top it should not right? Anybody here have any experience using this stuff? Anybody used it on a car? Please educate me on this.

I saw a show where they used the gold leaf on business signs where they engrave the letters and then rub the gold leaf in them. I forget how they finished that off though - raw or what?

I haven't seen it used automotively. Does it adhere well to smooth surfaces?

I wouldnt recommend blending clears. Anytime you hit area with a light mist of clear, you're going to leave overspray. Overspray will be hazy and the clear will be dry. You could probably pull it off with some wetsanding and buffing, but its not something ive tried.

That gold leaf is seriously some hard stuff to work with. I've heard that it takes years of practice and lots of skill to get it right. From what I understand, you do clear coat over it. Usually they put it on a car on a new paint job before clear coating it. I don't think its a good idea to try blending the clear on your car unless you really know what you're doing.

Well the gold used for that purpose doesn't tarnish bcs it's pure 99.99%. Area to be covered get's primed with a glue and then the the gold leaf is applied. On engravings or signs there's no clear coating applied on top of the gold, at least on the ones I've seen during the process, but , on a car wich will get washed and scrubbed or in a high traffic area(lots of touching) a clear coat might work but I'm not sure of how well it will bond with the gold bcs I've never tried it. How about just getting brass powder and mixing it in with the clear coat and use it as a gold paint, then finish it up with a clear coat. Might be more cost effective since gold leaf can get expensive.
