Do you think I should trade......?

Hey Guys ! I was wondering what to do and decided to put this out there to see if this trade is worth it. I have a 1994 Ford Escort LX Hatchback that has 80K orig miles and a whole ton of new parts, but the body is kind of beat, a little rust and some fading, but mechanically sound. My friend wants to trade me his 1998 Chrysler Concorde with the 2.7L and it has 190K. He bought it a year ago for $2500 and it runs great. I would want to change the timing chain and tensioner since he doesn't know when or if it was done. The Concorde runs great at this time and only needs an ac recharge. He agrees to let my mechanic check it out. If it checks out by my mechanic, and I plan on getting the timing chain and tensioner replaced, do you guys think that this would be a wise trade? My friend drives alot for work and wants the Escort because of the gas mileage. Can a car with 190K actually have much of a useful life yet before it starts to kill me with repairs? Let me know what you think? Thanks Christopher

Not having owned a 2.7 and only reading about them, I wouldn't do it.

If it was a 3.2 or 3.5, I'd think about it.

I wouldnt do it, the escorts are pretty decent rides and much easy to drive for one. It will last you a ton longer than the corde. Id say if its a 1998 with 190k the engine is probably done, if you traded him I would take the concorde and list it on ebay, then proceed to buy a better car, or one with lower mileage.

Stay with Escort as you know the mechanics. The 2.7 is a crap shoot. A little body work and the Escort will more than likely outlast the Concorde.

Thanks for the responses so far. I really want to do the trade, but since everyone on here is apprehensive and I was too (thats why I posted here), I want to do a little more thinking. Keep the responses coming........Thank You........PS I used to have a 2000 Intrepid with the 2.7, died at 60K, I had a 3.2 put in with 16K for 2.5K but then the trans started to go and I traded it in. I figured since this one (concorde)went 190K and on the origional engine, maybe it is immortal? lol
I spoke to my friend this morning and he told me the woman he bought it from bought it in 1999 with 40K and put 140K on it so when my friend got it had 180K, she told him it had new power steering pump, radiator and heater core, tires, brakes, etc. He told me to go to the shop where she serviced it to see if I could get receipts to see what else if anything was done. I really am falling stupid in love with this concorde because it looks and drives nice, but so did my intrepid with the 2.7L read above. I just thought this would be my chance out of an ugly yet reliable escort and into a newer car (I just drive it in winter, I have a 2002 Camero that I don't want to get all salty in these NY winters.

If this were springtime and you wanted a cool ride for the summer, yah, I'd do it.

With winter coming up, well, keep the rust bucket as a beater. It's got 1/2 the miles of your friends Concorde without the real/imagined baggage of the 2.7 motor.

Unless of course you really want to tear into the 2.7 motor to take care of the reliability issues. In addition to the chain and tensioner I'd do the water pump too.

Actually, I'd have your friend do the tensioner/chain/water pump and offer to help. If you're happy with the looks of the motor once the front end is open, you can do the trade and offer to pay for the new parts put in.

cfslevin, you gotta consider that this is a board that loves the Trep/LH Family of cars and if we are all unanimously telling you NOT to trade, there are damn good reasons for it.

DON'T DO IT MAN!!!!

Fords are pretty bad too, i can tell u from expereince but if you keep up with scheduled maintenance and never try to change ur timing belt it should last u a long time, the escort that is.

I have a contour and i finally got the timing belt to run perfect guys. Going on 800km and the belt still looks like new. Service the ford at the dealer and it will be better than the corde.

Plus dont forget the fuel economy difference, fords are very good on gas vs the concorde or any other big car for that matter.

Stick with the ford.
