Adding RKE - 1999 SE

Hey guys, I'm doing some fun modifications on my 1999 Intrepid SE... here's one that I've got coming up. I have an aftermarket AudioVox remote start system in my car (car bought used, and came with it), but it doesn't work. However, the OEM key fob works to unlock the doors and trunk, etc. But, my car doesn't have the sun sensor. So what I'm thinking is, the remote start system has the OEM fob programmed to it. Here's what I'd like to do:

1. Get the AudioVox POS out of my car. It doesn't work, and it's junk.
2. Add the dash sun sensor.
3. Get OEM RKE working!
4. Auto headlights
5. ATC!!

My question is, how difficult is it on a 2G Intrepid to ADD the RKE system? Is there substantial cost involved? How much time? I don't mind doing a little work, but if it costs $100 and takes 4 hours, I'll just stick with my current system, even though it doesn't really work.

Thanks,
Nick

The BCM has to come out in order for you to install the RKE module, however the fob(s) need to be programmed by the stealership if you dont have factory keyless already.
As far as the rest of the mods, I could probably help you out with some parts. I have a complete ATC harness along with ATC module, ATC head and Sun sensor that I might get rid of soon. I got these for my SE some time ago but now since I'll be getting a new trep, looks like I won't be doing this mod anymore. Search is still ongoing for the new trep though.

If the OEM keyfob already works with the door opening and trunk then what are you trying to install ???? The above confirms you already have RKE from factory.

VTSS?

No, what is going on right now is that I don't have OEM RKE. I was told that because I don't have the sun sensor, I don't have OEM RKE. However, my car has an aftermarket remote start in it, which doesn't work with the remote start fob that I have now. I did get an OEM RKE fob that works, however. What I am thinking is that the remote start was programmed to accept the OEM fob signal. In any case, I want the aftermarket system removed, because the antenna is obtrusive and ugly. So, I want to just have an OEM RKE system. From what I understand, I just need to pull the BCM and get an RKE module from a boneyard car, and connect it, and once the dealer programs everything, I'm good to go, right?

BTW, what is VTSS?

Thanks,
Nick

RKE doesn't need a sunsensor, just an RKE module wich is probably already installed in your BCM. Sunsensor is there to activate the auto headlights. Just so you know no car leaves the factory installed with a remote starter, they're all aftermarket/dealer installed.

You have factory RKE. Its usually not possible to program an aftermarket unit to be controlled by a factory remote, nor is there any reason to do so. If you don't want the remote start, just remove it. VTSS is the factory theft system, this is what is connected to the sun sensor. Cars that have RKE without VTSS don't have a sun sensor. My car had factory RKE but no sensor because I didn't ahve ATC or VTSS.

RKE is not the factory alarm. It's just Lock/Unlock the doors, remote open the trunk and a panic button. Although the VTSS(Factory Alarm System) uses the RKE fobs to arm and disarm them too. That "Sun Sensor" on the dash serves two purposes when the appropriate options are in the car. It has a red LED to indicate whether the VTSS is armed and is also a Sun Load Sensor for the ATC. You can wire the Sun sensor in and install an Auto Headlight switch and you will have that function. Later if you add an ATC with the aprropriate dash harness and Blower Control module you'll already have the Sun Sensor installed. One thing that's a question mark is the RKE fob... you have a Factory type or are you referring to what may be the remote from the installed Audiovox?
If you wanted to install the factory RKE..you just need the module which plugs into the BCM and one or two Factory RKE fobs. You'll need to get the dealer to program the first fob into the RKE and then after that you can program others your self. If you had an EVIC or could borrow one then you could program that first fob yourself and eliminate the dealer.

If you have this remote:

If when you press the unlock button on the Factory remote and it only unlocks the drivers door on the first press then you probably have OEM RKE.

You have Factory Remote Keyless Entry, how ever since you do not have the Dash LED that means that you do not have VTSS = Vehicle Theft Security System.
