car buying advice

I am looking at a newer car. the seller has sent me pics of the car and the rims are aftermarket and look crappy. he says he can get different rims for more $$. the cars price is ok now so I set up a time to check it out this weekend. I would be happy with nice factory rims but the seller did not say what kind of rims he can get. details i suppose. I think the odds of him finding a set of rims i like is pretty low. what do you do when you buy a car with stuff you don't like? go thru the hassle of taking the crap off and replacing it? i guess that is what modding really is.

I checked out the car today. the 2 rear tires are worn evenly and are brand X. the front tires are brand Y and 1 tire has very little tread and the other tire looks ok. all the rims have pretty good road rash/curb damage. the car feels real darty when i drive it. almost like a bent rim. with curb damage i would expect that. the rims are 5 spoke chrome alloys and look nice but thats about it. once you start moving they roll like crap. the seller is pretty firm on price and its a good price but i would need a new set of wheels/tires. they are 45 series/17 inch rims so the sidewalls are pretty short.

More info would be nice.

First thought, if the wheels and tires are in pretty bad shape, it would be a good indication of how the car was treated.

Which then leads to me wondering what kind of car is it? Cause if you're talking about a Twin Turbo Z car, I might forgive that since those cars are so rare. But if you're talking about a trep, I wouldn't even bother thinking about this car anymore and wait for the next one since there's hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of them on the road.

So....What kind of car are we talking about and how much is he asking? If you want our opinions, at least give us as much info as you can.

I know this is a trep site and buying a car is not really specific unless you are buying something special which affects price. yes, it is not a trep. its a 99 mustang. its a lowly V6 car but the owner made it a GT clone. it has a GT "cobra" rims, hood scoop, exterior trim and looks really nice. we have been looking for awhile and have been looing at GT's and V6 cars. I just don't know what a mustang should drive like. maybe its the short wheel base/wide tires. every one we drive seems twitchy. they are noisy, seem to roll like crap and are underpowered. maybe the trep is nicer than i give it credit for.

If you actually do want a Mustang, do you want a V6 Mustang? Do you want a Mustang GT? Or do you want a V6 Mustang that's been converted to look like something it's not? For all you know the hood scoop and body mods were put on with a rivet gun and a twelve pack of beer. I wouldn't touch a car that's been funked up like that and most other people wouldn't, either. Just the fact that it's got low profile tires with different brands and very different wear is enough to put me off of it because it's probably been driven hard and hasn't been taken care of conscientiously enough to keep good, matching brand tires on it. What else have they scrimped on? What else has been neglected? I'd tell them 'thanks but no thanks' and look for something better. Besides, you'll be doing yourself a favor by not buying a 'funky' car. I just don't trust a car that someone has modified. Most people don't do things to my standards.

Buy a clean original car and keep the mods to a reasonable minimum. A short-wheelbase Mustang with wide tires is going to be kinda twitchy and not roll real well, that's almost a given, but if you want one, buy the nicest most original one you can get - not that one.

A few details are in order. the car is for my 17 yr old daughter. why buy a V6 brick when a GT is way cooler? MONEY. also, I don't want a rookie driver to get in over their head and wrap it around a tree. lets see, rookie driver, icy roads, lousy handling car. where does this lead? I would like something in good shape. we have looked at low priced stuff and its crap. beat up bodies, lousy interiors, you name it. and the sellers want top dollar for it too. I know if you search long enough you might come across a deal but this 2 month process is a total PITA. this car looks nice. would new wheels/tires/struts make it ride better? maybe. for about 1K in parts. I think a 7yr old car could use new struts and having nice rolling bits might help the ride.

If it rolls like crap and is underpowered, you aren't going to like the car once you have it. It sounds like it has been beat up too much and with so many other cars available, well, why bother? I'd say keep looking and pass that one up. -CW

a 99 vintage stang with a V6 is gonna be a pooch. I think I need to drive a few more to really get a good idea on what type of ride to expect. maybe they are all slow and noisy. we drove a 2003 last week and it rode the same.

I suggest you find a 99 GT and drive it before buying that V6.... to me after driving a GT, a V6 Mustang is like driving a 4 banger!!!!!!!

Yeah, but as I understand, this car is for his daughter (nothing against girls, I'd say the same if it was his son). So a V6 might be the way to go.

find her a nice camary or accord she will thank you in the long run (insurance, fuel, up keep, no ford 3.8 headgasket replacements etc)

I was going to say insurance too, but its for a girl, If you get her a 2007 Mustang GT itll cost aorund the same for her insurance, compared to mine, ONLY because I have a penis!
