Which car is better?

I wasn't quite sure about all these problems with the dodge 2.7 engines before...

I bought a dodge stratus (2001, w/ the 2.7) about 2 weeks ago, and upon reading all the BAD things and horror stories about this car... I just want to go back and trade it in... ill pay the extra downpayment if I have to just to get rid of the car..

the car is SO nice except Ijust dont feel safe in it anymore after the engine horror stories I've been reading... I bought a warranty for 1400 extra... it covered EVERYTHING in the car for 2 years/24,000 miles... I'm safe during that timeframe but I'll have that warranty done in a year... after that, the water pump could die and i'd lose the engine if the timing chain went... and i cant afford to check it myself b/c im a mechanical n00b and i cant afford to have it looked at.

I owe about 9500 altogether (the warranty included) The car is worth close to 8 w/ all the features it came with plus whatever extra they include with the warranty, so lets say they'll take 9 for the car.

I can get a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse GT... previously owned by an old couple (so I'm pretty sure it wasnt driven like some hardcore wanna be fast 16 year old)

I can get that car for 9... its just now rolling over 100,000 miles.

Would this be a smart thing to do? *flame suit engage*

I think you would be better off keeping the Stratus with what you have already invested into it. I would think your insurance rates are lower also than they would be with the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Good luck with keeping the 2.7 engine running well, if I am not mistaken, the standard advice is to use synthetic oil in it. -CW

I agree.. Any car with 100K on it is going to need some maintenance items done .....period..Including the Eclipse....,if they havent been taken care of by the previous owner you should plan on some expenses when you purchase the car...If you consider using the money that you are most likely going to lose in the deal (not to mention the higher insurance rates you will most likely pay)to go ahead and proactively change the items that you are worried about(water pump, timing components) you will most likely be ahead of the game..And you can't worry always about the mechanical parts of the car failing or you will go nuts :bigeyecry ... All cars will have something go wrong at some time during their lifetime...How could a million dollar Nascar blow an engine??

And don't bet that an "old couple" who put 100k on an Eclipse GT in 6 years didn't run the @#$%^! out of it occasionally!!

Also read your aftermarket warranty very carefully.. Make sure you know what it does and doesn't cover..
And good luck!!

LOL old people run their cars like theres no tomorrow (literally). Not as bad as young kids but still its pretty bad.

BTW i believe it was only the 2000 intrepid with the 2.7l that had problems and the intrepid in general.

Ive never heard of many sebrings blowing their 2.7l and they all have them for the most part.

The decision is up to you, the eclipse is much better as a car, but im not sure about this specific eclipse.

Just follow owner manual for maintance and make sure you do regular oil changes and you'll probably find the Strat will meet you needs pretty nicely.

When you hit 100k in the strat, just change the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner. Change your oil every 4500 or so with pure synthetic like mobil1. You'll be fine. Like I said before, do some more research, and you'll find that all the horror sotries from this engine are from intrepids, not the stratus.
