Well, it was always like that in the past here too. But I've noticed a change lately. It may be just certain dealers that are smart enough to realize that if they stick to the book labour and their high prices, they end up getting zero because you'll go to NAPA or CarQuest for parts and then a local shop with better rates.
I've had 3 instances lately where I've gone in to inquire about parts prices at Chrysler dealers, then asked about the shop time, then said "that's too much - I'll get the parts from Jeff Hunter, do some of the work myself and then get XYZ to do the rest. When I turn around to leave I hear, "hang on a minute - let's see if we get this down to a more manageable cost !!!!" . I kid you not.
The best one was when I went to ask about an A/C repair on my Dad's Intrepid. They wanted $480 to replace a line, some fittings and do a recharge. I told them to stuff it - the Intrepid is my Dad's second car and the A/C can stay broken. I went in 2 days later to buy some ATF and the Service Mgr asked me again about the A/C repair. I said, "It ain't gonna happen at the price you quoted. Your guys can sit idle in the back in an empty shop while you pay their wages, but I'm not paying. It's a frickin 1/2"pipe and a few ounces of juice and you want $500 ?? Not from me. " Next words were, "well let's see what we can do here" He fiddles around with a calculator for a minute and then asks where the car is. I tell him it's available. He says, 'have it here within 1/2 and hour and we'll get it done for $220, tax included. " I said, "I'll be right back, in about 15 minutes".
Similar thing when I went in to price out timing chain parts, water pump and gaskets. Added it all up right there, then got the book labour cost and the total came out to some stupid number close to $2K. I pulled my "never mind - I'll buy the parts in the states for way less and then I'll do...." , and suddenly a package deal started to emerge. "If you buy alll the parts here, and get the work done here, and if can give us 2 days instead of one, we'll knock X% off this and Y % off that and....how does $1350 for the whole package sound ? " I was surprised. They really wanted the business.
Maybe it's just a Canadian thing, I don't know. I think the dealers are hurtin, with truck and SUV sales way down. They need money.
