Any benefits to using a fuel cooler?

I'm not talking about the ice can type. I was looking in my Summint Racing catalog and say a fuel cooler like an oil cooler. The description reads "can cool fuel temperature up to 80 degrees. So it could cool it 3 degrees for all I know.

I know that down here in the middle of summer everything bakes hot in SC. I figured that this might be beneficial. Or is it a waste of money?

Fuel coolers are used in drag racing because cooling the fuel makes it slightly denser and gets just a tiny bit more power - like possibly another 5 or 6 hp on an engine that makes 700 or 800 hp. Maybe enough to shave a couple hundredths off the ET. As far as Intrepids go, there's no point to it.

I realy think Kcarlos has the correct answer ,
But heres my 2cents worth

the intrepid may be a good candidate for a fuel cooler since it uses a returnless fuel lines (doesn't circulate the fuel thru the fuel rails and back to the tank to cool it) BUT you gotta weigh the benifits-- 1/2-1 more HP maybe? with the drawbacks-- In any collision you will be more likely to spray fuel on hot parts =fire??
I wouldn't think it was worth the expense and risk..

Even if it cools the fuel enough to make it denser, it wouldn't make any difference performance wise. That denser fuel will initially give you a rich mix, which will be sensed by the o2 sensors, and the PCM will cut back on the injector pulse width to maintain a normal air/fuel ratio (just my opinion). But for $40 go ahead and give it a try, then we will all know if it does anything.

That's right fuel bleeds right back into the tank at the pump doesn't it. I read that some diesel trucks use these coolers on their return lines.

I've been thinking about it a bit. With the plastic fuel tank maybe the fuel in it would stabilize with the exterior temps maybe 100 deg. Driving down the road with 100 deg air blowing on it, its not gonna cool that much is it.

I dunno. I am on this cooler kick right now. I wanna change the power steering cooler to one with fins- I wanna tap in an aux tranny cooler and an oil cooler to boot. Luckily there aren't any other fluids to cool. Wait a minute... I wonder how hot that windshield washer fluid gets. I need to put one on those lines too.

Yeah , tranny fluid ,ps fluid and oil run very hot so cooling them a bit would always be a good thing... and the fuel tank being under the car probably isn't going to be much hotter than the outside temp, and sending it through a finned cooler is only going to cool it to the ouside temp anyway. Can't see more than a few degrees cooling happening at best...

Also have to consider that too much finned cooler surface mounted in front of the car is going to restrict the airflow and add some heat to the cool air that you need to keep the A/C and radiator working correctly..

But for the windshield washer fluid I think I would go the other way-warm it up a bit-- melt the bugs, ice and snow right off the windshield! :icon_surp

Well the PS replacement would go right where the stock one is now. The tranny/oil I have a special setup for that not in front of the radiator.

Also the fuel dose get rather hot just cause of the feil ralls themselvs. You have outside temp fuel comeing from the tank to the ralls as it goes through the rails it pickes up the engine heat, and that now hot fuel returns back to the tank and vaporizes. to be used in the perge system. So I can only see this to be used on an Intrepid as a emmissions device. to cool the fuel and reduce the vappors in the tank.

Hey 95 trep how you doing?

As lextrep mentions - the 2g has a returnless system. Excess fuel and/or pressure is bled off right at the pump in the tank.
