Blown Motor !!

Yep, my mechanic just called and said he thinks the motor is blown. Yep, it's a 2.7 but get this , only 50,000 miles on it ! WTF ! I fully admit it's been 5,000 miles over the sugested 3000 oil change time (Yes go ahead and bash me :icon_sad: ) but the car never smoked or showed any other signs. Freakin oil light never went off either. So anyway he's starting to tear down the top end and will let me know. This will probably run me $300, but he said expect the worst and a rebuilt "Jasper" motor might run me $ 5,500 - $6,000 dollars. I'll let him check it out and shell out the $300 but does anyone have any suggestions as to having it rebuilt. I mean is the car worth $6000 ? Would it be resonable or is just getting another car more financialy sound ?
Need some guidence

Rebuilt jasper motor for 6k? **** that, get a used engine for like >1500 and have someone else put it in. That guys tryin to screw you.

The guy is probably NOT stying to screw him. The mech is suggesting a 1 for 1 motor replacement using components from a known-good, guaranteeed source.

Asking a mech shop to go get a used junkyard pull motor is asking for work with no guarantee. And lots of extra hours on the labor bill.

As far as sticking to the light-duty schedule of 7500 miles for an oil change, well, even the little old lady who only drives her car on Sundays needs to work from the severe duty schedule.

**bashes u on the head**

Damn.......you went HOW far on the oil change? That's suicide for ANY engine, much less our favorite 2.7.

And a rebuilt Jasper engine? For that price, you can get one brand-new. Or a 3.2/3.5. Or hell just get another Trep :D.

Even with Mobil 1, for a sludged 2.7 8k is way to much.

A jasper 2.7 is $3890 just for the record. You would probably have another $1500 in installation/parts, etc.

I would say get a 3.2/3.5 and throw it in. You could do it yourself for around $2500, give or take, depending on how you do it, or pay someone up to $3500 to do it. $3500 is pushing it value wise on the car.

Man, I knew I'd get beat up on the oil change. I just thought some warning light would come on and let me know pressure was low, but I guess there's more to it then that. (Kick self in ass). A lot of you suggested buying a 3.5, I take it you all mean a used motor. Is a junk yard yard the only place to get one ?

You are wise and correct oh sensai.

Shop just called and said it's shot. Cam was seized and so much sludge he's ever seen. Kill me. He won't put his name on a used motor either. Can't say that I blame him. So it's 6K or a new car. Also the tranny was slipping a few times a week. usually in the morning when I went to backup. I'd have to put it back in park then wait and try again. So, what can I buy for 6K these days ?

I bought a 2000 LHS with all the bells and whistles (minus sunroof) for $6500. I bet you can get a really nice Intrepid, Concorde, 300M or LHS within your budget. That is, if you want a similar car... just stay away from the 2.7L. With 6 grand to spend, you have a lot of options for a used 2nd gen. :)

Was that private party or through a dealer ?
Anyone want to buy a 2000 intrepid w/50K and a BLOWN MOTOR.
LOL. Really, I'm serious.

Dealership. Asking price was $6950 but got him down to the $6500 including taxes, etc.

If the Intrepid is otherwise in good shape, maybe someone could just put in another engine and it'd be good for another 100k... But, the likely scenario is to strip it for parts or sell it as-is. I have no idea what they go for, but Ebay has had some Treps without the engine for $600-$800 that I've seen. Good luck.

There are plenty of stories and experiences on motor swaps. It would probably be easier for you to do a search and read up a bit to get the basics down........

Well I've decided to do an engine swap. Dealers won't give me squat for the car with no motor, and there's nothing out there in the price range I like. So I located a 3.5L motor that already been changed over. Apparently that's what this company does. The motor is $2000 shipped. It has 34k on it and will throw in the tranny for another $300. My mechanic will do the sawp for $1800 give or take. So for $4100 or so I get a running car. Now this company ( Midwest Auto Recycling) supposedly warrentys 6 months on most parts. The motors are supposedly complete, started, inspected for compression, cylinder leak down tested, checked for oil pressure and cleaned. The trannies are test driven and visually inspected and cleaned. What do you all think about this ? I am going to ask them for a vin # so I can run a carfax on it. Also I will ask for a test numbers to see if everything is even. How about it ?

Good luck in whatever you choose. Personally I would go for another car. 4k buys a lot these days. But if you have had your car for a while, it may mean more to you than that.

Where are you located?
Yeah, it's a tough call. I look in the paper and went to two used car lots and around here 4k wount get much unfortunalty. They wanted 8,999 for a 04' stratus with 42K on it. In my mind I'm getting a 00' intrepid for $4100. That's not bad. Remember I won't get but $500 for the car right now.
