Sad height problem

so Ive got jackstands under 4 corners of my car
after I was done putting it up, just as I was about to leave the garage, Im like "that tire looks like its still on the ground" - bend to check - "it is!... sht" so I check the others and so are they all on the ground.
now my car looks like a freak cause its up in the air, but the tires hang down far enuf to still rest on the ground. like a damn truck.
additionaly, the jack I was using had lost its handle, so it was replaced with a longer aluminum pole wich was bending when I put up the front of the car. the jack was absicly as high as it could go, but the jackstands are on the lowest setting - the only way I could get them under there.
the wheels have no free movement so I assume that there is still enuf weight on them to defeat the purpose of having it up in the first place.
so how can I get it up higher without buying a larger jack? (currently, not much money)
only thing I could think of was to put some decent sized plywood under the jack so its higher, lifts higher, etc
ideas? something I did wrong?

Um....sounds like you need to get a floor jack that lifts the car high enough to get the tires off the ground. That's the safe way to do it.

Put the jack on something big and flat, so it will go higher. Otherwise, read above post.

I usually throw a couple of 2x4 chunks between the jack pad and the car to get it higher. I've not done it when jacking the whole car like you need to do but it works darn good for transmissions and engines.
