Question running very low coolant bad?

today I was checking up on my beater since it was kinda nice out and noticed that the coolant was low.
I went to fill it and added, i think, about half a bottle! I thought it was pouring out the bottom or something!
anyways, I dont think there is a leak, at least not a major one, so I assume its been this way for awhile. is that bad?

also, tranny fluid shouldnet be abviously brown and maybe a bit burnt smelling right? heh

I added a thing of STP oil treatment then noticed that it looks like it may have expired in 03. any idea if thats not good for the car?

As long as you werent overheating-- it probably didnt hurt anything. Running any fluid low is bad. There has to be some kind of leak if it was that low. Keep an eye on it.

I would get the transmission flushed and the filter changed if the fluid is brown and burnt.

About the coolant. When the car is up to operating temp, the coolant level rises. If you filled it up entirely while cold, it will just blow out the excess coolant when it warms up.

check your oil for water/coolant contaminationm, and your hoses too, leaks can leak out while the hoses ar ewarm, and not leak while the hoses are colllllddddd!, take a look, very carefully, squeeze them and see!, (tip: always turn on your heater full blast with the heat at max hot, @ whatever direction, dash vents, etc... doesnt matter, anyway, the you fill her up, let her get nice and warm, you could have been filling her up with the heater off before or something, because you have more capacity with the heater core opened up!), just a tip! Hope this helps!

so it could not be leaving spots on the groud if its leaking? instead leaking into something else basicly? ----- and some of the stuff may leak only when the car is warmed up? good to know
I found some coolant system additive at walmart and put that in. it says not to put it in a dirty rad. but I dont have the $$$ to do much right now.

is there aything I could do to the tranny or brake fluids to help them? I think they havent been changed in 3+ years.... I will get them done proper, but anything I can do in the meantime?
