What would you choose?

I'm hoping to buy a new vehicle sometime later this year to replace my Intrepid.

I'm looking for a vehicle with pretty good offroad ability, but at the same time is sound and comfortable/fun enough to drive long distances on the freeway.

Because I can get a Chrysler employee discount, I'd prefer to stick with Chrysler vehicles, although I am open to other considerations.

Right now.. I'm looking at the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) Sahara Edition, and the Dodge Nitro R/T. Built to my specifications, these are both around $28k, so price isnt really an issue either way.

They are somewhat similar. They are both live axle, they are both 4wd (which I need), they both have pretty good ground clearance (less in the Nitro, though), and they both have traction control and ESP.

Obviously, the Wrangler is the better offroad vehicle, and the Nitro is the better driving vehicle (or at least I'm assuming it is).

The Nitro has 260 horsepower vs 202 in the Wrangler, the Wrangler would be manual vs an automatic in the Nitro, the Wrangler has 32 inch tires vs the Nitro's 20 inch tires..

I'm very lost. I dont do really hardcore offroading, although my friend is into it, and if I had a Jeep I could go with him quite often. I'm kinda leaning towards the Wrangler as its pretty badass and convertible hard top, but the Nitro would probably suit me better because I do a LOT of road driving and I've heard Wranglers have a lot of road noise and are uncomfortable over long trips. At the same time it would be really fun to mod the Wrangler out and raise it, waterproof it, etc. (and mods are REALLY cheap for Jeeps) which are all things I probably couldnt do with the Nitro unless I wanted to shell out incredible amounts of money. Also, I'm a very fast driver, which could lean better depending on the vehicle. I think the Wrangler would slow me down, which would probably be a good thing, but the Nitro would allow me to speed when I want to, and wouldnt drive me nuts having to stay under xx mph.

So to sum this up:

Quote:
Wrangler Pros:
-Better offroad ability
-Cheap and fun mods
-Convertible hard top
-32 inch tires
-Large ground clearance
-Manual for better offroading

Wrangler Cons:
-Worse fuel mileage
-Loud on the freeway
-Slower on the freeway
Quote:
Nitro Pros:
-More horsepower
-Better gas mileage
-Automatic for long road trips
-Quieter on the freeway
-Better creature comforts
-Faster on the freeway
-More hauling room
-Performance tuned suspension would be more comfortable on the road and better around corners

Nitro Cons:
-Worse offroading ability
-Very limited mods
-Not as much ground clearance

What would you guys buy?

I voted for the Nitro, but if you had a regular Wrangler as an option I would have picked that! The unlimiteds are still too damn long for me... defeats the purpose of what it is IMHO...

Yea.. The Unlimiteds are freaking long, but I frequently drive a lot of people (and haul a lot of computer equipment) around, so the extra room would be a huge benefit. On top of that, I really dislike the look of the 2wd 2007 Wranglers.. The wheels are just way too big compared to the rest of the vehicle and it makes it look like a toy car (and quite ugly, IMHO).

Go with the one that has the best characteristics for the conditions you are in most often. I assume you will be On-Road more often than Off-Road, so I would go with the Nitro. Aside from functionality, that Wrangler is one ugly ass machine.

I really like the looks of the Wrangler. I think the Nitro looks better though. It reminds me of this Range Rover. It even has the side vents and everything.. for $40k less!

Heres a picture of the Rubicon Unlimited I took at NAIAS this year.. It gives a little better overall view then any of the pics I have found on Jeep.com. 56k beware!

Yea.. I looked at all the different car options I could get, but decided I wanted something that I could play with in the snow and offroad more then something I could do 150+ in.

BTW, how will you afford this new rig if you can't afford a platinum membership?

I'd get one of those. It's off-road enough for me being a rally car and all.

Out of my price range, and insurance would be ungodly, considering my record.

Oh yeah, and then there's that (insurance).

Get it and insure it as a regular Lancer.

Funny quick story about insurance. My old 90 Eclipse Turbo FWD fell into a non-existent category for insurance. Because back then, the trims were RS, GS and GSX (no GST), my car always fell in the GS (non-turbo 2.0 liter) category. So for insurance purposes, it was a lot cheaper than it should have been to insure cause the companies just thought it was a regular non-turbo Eclipse. It's not like I lied, that's what the VIN pulls up as.
