EGR Question

Do they make a EGR block off kit? And if not, is it safe to just block it off?

They dont make one for our vehicles. EGR block off kits are used primarily for racing applications, and carbureted engines. 2002 and newer LH vehicles do not have an EGR system at all, because of improvements in other emissions components.

You can remove your EGR valve, but you will forever have a check engine light on, and the fuel ratio and trims will be wrong because the ecu will be expecting exhaust gas from the EGR valve at certain times. Not recommended.

i can attest to the fuel mix being jacked up. my egr valve was stuck closed and my gas mileage was horrible. i drive about 7 miles a day on an army base usually under 40mph with alot of stop signs. i take the same route every day. i was getting 14mpg avg. now that i have fixed it, im getting 18mpg avg

Yep, 98-01 have the EGR, and 02-04 dont. I know this from doing engine swaps using 02-04 engines in 98-01 cars. They still have the port at the back of the head, but it is plugged off with a pipe plug. There are also plugged off holes for the EGR tubes in the 02-04 3.5 plenums. You have to remove the plug and drill out the plenum holes when swapping to a 98-01 so you can install the EGR valve.

Some Ford vehicles are without EGR valves also. It is the small four cylinder used in the Contours and Escorts.

that's odd because they still list an egr for the 2002 model year but I can't find anything for the 03-04's. i don't know if the elimination of the egr had to do with improved emissions technology or a change in Gov't standards for those model years. Pardon me, I stand corrected that not all 2nd gens have an egr. I must rep you for not neg repping me.

edit* i can't rep you yet, must have repped you recently.

but in any event, you don't want to remove and block off the egr on a vehicle equipped with one. Yes, fuel economy will suffer, as well as the CEL. But one other overlooked issue that happens when the egr system is inoperative is pinging. The purpose of the egr valve is to reduce combustion chamber temps to lower NOx emissions. Not only do NOx emissions increase with cc temps, but also the likelyhood of pre-ignition, which is that unpleasant pinging sound.

Yeah, it may be 2002.5 and newer that had no EGR-- half year thing. They did that in 97 too, when they came out with a 97.5 2.7 and 3.2 engine.

Gotta spread it around before giving it to you again.

Not that I am aware of...
Although, you would have the issue of the CEL being on when the EGR would try to engage and it's not there. You would need to have it rendered inoperative in the ECM.
