Trading in the Intrepid...

as of late my car is just giving me problems and becoming a money pit. yet its so close to being paid off. i hate to trade her in but for my benefit and with my situation i think im better off. shes gettin close to 130k miles and im sure going to need quite a bit of work soon. just curious to know what you guys and girls would do in this situation. would you rough it out and keep the intrepid? or trade it in? if you were to trade it in what would you look into getting? me personally i think ill need something commuter friendly. ive got work and school im dealing with now and later this year ima start commuting cause of the move im making. just curious to know your thoughts. have a great day!

I would get a Impala or srt-4 just like dabirdzR/T recommended. As long as you keep it American. lol

Personally, I would be inclined to keep the Intrepid and buy without a trade-in. Only because I enjoy doing the mechanic "work" when the car has troubles. And it can be nice to have two cars. Of course a lot depends on your situation, do you have room for two cars, do you like to work on your car.

KBB puts a trade in for your car @ about $2600 and private party around $4300.
I wouldn't ever want to trade a car in unless I absolutely needed the money to put towards the new vehicle. You could always buy the new car, pay for it completely with the loan, then privately sell the car and put all of the money into the new car loan.

The toyota yaris gets pretty good mileage for your commuter needs, and it has a low price.

Yeah thats all fine and dandy until his engine goes, and then he is stuck with a car worth three or four thousand less or whatever his car is worth now. I would be pretty pissed if I lost that much money. If you decide to keep your car... and the engine gives out, will you have money for a replacement?

Start seriously looking at other options. You can't live with f.ex a busted engine which would make the car basically worthless. Look at some 4-cylinders for the mileage. For the next car, what sort of budget are you operating on?

300 a month gives you a lot of options, I think. You could probably get a brand-new or close to new car which will last many years.

Just don't hold on to the money pit too long if you can avoid it.
