I found the correct one. The 2nd book; (Engine Performance Manual) is the one I need. It has the fuel system and emissions etc.

1980 Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth Service Manual Set LeBaron, Cordoba, Diplomat

I bought the one on the left. Which will come in handy eventually I'm sure. Full wiring diagrams etc

Ed, did you ever check the fuel jets in the carb when it wouldnt start, to see if they are spraying fuel?

IF its a fuel issue, it almost seems like its a supply problem, its filling the carb, running out of fuel in the carb---float sticking, bad pump; carb looks a bit old; if the car sat, could be varnish on the needle valves that the float operates. Did you try to run it with the fuel cap removed (you mentioned you thought you had excessive pressure in the tank)?

Sounds like a fuel issue to me on the video, as it is "trying" to start---again you can spray some ether or carb cleaner down the carburetor and see if it starts; that will be a sure bet that it is a fuel issue; (or see if the jets are spraying)...

Also, I dont suggest trying to rebuild the carb yourself; if there are any carburetor/fuel injection shops left in your area let them do it---we've got a good one here, guy is old as dirt, still rebuilds carbs, they will do the precise adjustments you may not be able to do.

Looks like the original carb, with the lean burn and EGR removed---hence the blocked off hoses, so that shouldnt affect anything.

Yes. I wouldn't say they're "spraying", but more of a squirting.

The jets are squirting, but idk if it's enough... or it's intermittently running into air pockets?

Just looking back at a couple of my previous posts...


Guess what... Charlene decided (after about a 10 minute fight with my foot and the key) to start up and stay running today. Running perfectly now actually, like nothing ever happened! Sound familiar? Yes, it's true! I do believe that now that I've ran the fuel down to a certain level in the tank, she'll operate normally.

I totally believe my guy over at the FMJBody site now... about the jumper. (the little 4-5" long piece of rubber fuel line going from the main line into the tank) It's got to be, or this is some crazy kind of coincidence. I'm going to test this theory by keeping no more than a half tank of gas for the next couple days.

Maybe now she'll stay running and I can get back to the steering and suspension fixes... those are more fun to work on

Tonight I cleaned all the acorns out of the intake manifold. I don't know if this car sat under a tree with it's hood up for a few years or some squrils made a home out of it, but it had a ton of acorns.

I was thinking the only other possibilities of what could have been wrong, is there was something in the gas (water or trash) that cleared up the same exact way it did last time, and this whole idea of "the level of gas in the tank" is just a coincidence.

Or - the needle valve/float mechanism in the carb was stuck.

Things that I'm pretty sure it wasn't:

- The fuel pump all of a sudden starts working great again? Maybe.. now that the fuel level is down to a level that the pressure and pump can work together in harmony.

- Something was getting hot (carb, coil, or the ECU) nope! - it wasn't starting while it was cold the other night, and today I ruled the heat theory out by running the car in idle in my driveway for like 20 minutes and also driving it all over the neighborhood just fine after that.

Let's hope today proves the gas tank theory. If it runs fine all day today without adding any gas to the tank, we'll know my guy over at FMJ bodies was right, and I need to drop the tank and fix that jumper line...

One good thing is that the tank on these old J bodies are super easy to get to. It's right under the trunk. I hope (once I get it empty enough to manage) that it doesn't give me any trouble coming down.

I am going to try to run it with a half tank or less for a few days to see if that's really it, before I "yank the tank". I have a pretty good feeling it is...
