Question 4.6 N* .... Crazy or Inspired???

Okay, I know there's probably thoughts of, "WHAT!!!!???" going through your head right now.. but here me out. I have a 97 Seville SLS that has been plagued with electrical issues, but the motor itself still runs like a champ. NorthStars have been put into countless vehicles, sand rails, dune buggies, trucks and etc. both in FWD and RWD set ups. You can actually simplify the electric set of the engine quite a bit, killing my electrical problems in theory. As this car was a part of why my previous Intrepid was sold, I thought, "Wouldn't be ironic if the car that got rid of the previous Intrepid helped resurrect a new one?"

I'm wanting to know a few things here;
1) Being that others have done V8 swaps in Intrepids, what are the biggest factors in doing a V8 swap? i.e. mounting, dimensions, frame modifications, etc.

2) Where can I get accurate information about engine compartment dimensions?

3) Has this ever been attempted before?

4) How many think that this would be nice to see and/or that I'm completely nuts? lol

Probably about the time you got it done that Northstar would turn out the headgasket bolts.

Would you make it front or rear wheel drive? Different issues with each. I think it would be tougher to do a front wheel conversion and not nearly as rewarding.

This is one of the issues I've been mulling over, FWD or RWD... however, I've been leaning toward RWD due the longitudinal positioning of the original motor. I think the only way that would be practical to do a V8 front wheel drive Intrepid would be to find a a way to mate a V8 with a beefed up transmission in stock position. Something tells me that they don't make adapters for that, but then again I don't know lol.

Would it be cool? Yes

Practical? No

Expensive? You bet

From what I have seen all of the RWD conversions have all been pretty much cobbled together. The only one I've seen who was attempting to do it right gave up.

Yeah, when you start using sentences that contain "V8" and "Intrepid" at the same time, practicality has been all but forgotten. Cheap ain't exactly what I was going for though, ever since I had my first Trep I've wanted to make a monster one.
Heck, from the sources I've found even getting a 3.5 or 3.2 to put in one can be expensive anymore.

What's the goal? Fun project, speed, doing something different?

I don't think it has to be too expensive

Find an intrepid, say 2.7 base with a blown motor can be found on the cheap
Take either a complete RWD donor car or a early V8, think 70s or 80s
You have to have the welding and fabrication skills, need to make motor mounts, trans mount, mount the differential. Plumbing for brakes and cooling.
You will need to have a drive shaft made
Custom exhaust made
Butt loads of time

Besides these my issue would be trying to make it emission compliant which would mean either a wiring nightmare or doing this on a pre-emissions Gen I. In IL anything prior to the ODBII does not need to be tested.

Not my idea of fun, if I were looking for a project like that I'd rather fab a chassis of my own.

I'm on my 11th LH Car!

GTXKEN

This is the kind of information that I've been looking to find out, what all goes into it... I know there was a thread on here a couple years ago, where a member did a V8 conversion. I've had trouble locating it though.

^^Finally found that old thread, lots of info there, pics too!
