Approximate Key Costs?

I somehow lost my key to my car and am now in search of locksmiths. I have to wait until Tuesday either way, since almost every place is closed Memorial Day, so how much should I expect to pay to get a key remade for a 96 Intrepid?

Depends on whether it's a plain key or a Security "chipped' key. Make and mode/trim levell would be helpful. Along with a description of the key itself as far as the top portion.

It would be a simple plain key, I guess. Like I'm assuming it isn't chipped, as the cars an older one. As far as I know, the key itself is a simple key with the RAM icon up top in black. Nothing special about it. Opens up everything to the car.

If this helps, I googled the key. When I go to images, a 1994 Dodge Intrepid OEM came up and it looks the exact same as my lost key.

Dealer would have to re-make it with vin and proof of ownership (I broke my key in half in jacksonville 200 miles from home once!) Forget the cost though. 1G keys are not chipped.

Otherwise you can buy a new lock cylinder but if I recall correctly you need a key to remove the old one. so, either you beak it or get one re made.

Well luckily I have both, though the proof of ownership part might be iffy if they don't take temp titles. I had my name changed while I was waiting for my official title to come through, after buying the car the first time. Bought it in February and got the first one last month, I think it was around the 11th lol.

Last time I had to get a key from the dealer, it was only $3.
Seeing as that was 10-12 years ago, I'm sure its more now, but should still be cheaper than purchasing new lock and ignition cylinders (about $25).
I keep a spare key inside my wallet tucked behind my Soc Sec card.

I got the car from someone off CL, so is that still an option?

If the vehicle registration or title is in your name, the dealership can make you a key. If you haven't transferred the title into your name yet, then you may as well change the lock cylinders.

Well the title is kinda transferred. I don't know if it's a MN thing, but it takes two months to get the official title.Since my name changed, I have to wait one more month to get it update. So hopefully they take the temporary title. Otherwise I'll call up around the dealerships in the city and see what they say.
