What is a good switched power source?

I am installing an external voltage regulator on a 97 3.5. I need a good source of switched 12v power to run to the regulator, either from under the hood or through the firewall from the cabin. Whatever is easiest to access. Needs to be able to handle a 20 amp draw. I just bought this car and I am admittedly a ford guy. Your help is appreciated.

I dont appear to have ABS. Can I terminate the run from the regulator in the relay box and run a 30 amp fuse that would be there anyway? Theres power to the junctions.

Why are you running a outside reg? The internal reg in the PCM has a super low chance of going bad. What Diagnostics have you done to point towards it having failed.

And why do you need 20amps? A voltage reg shouldn't require 20 amps to operate beyound having a 12v sensing and ignition source when vehicle is operating.

Also, the alternator is rated for 90amps.

I neglected to mention that the cables were reversed on the battery, blowing the fusible link and the regulator in the pcm. For now I have jumpered the hazard light fuse but I'm looking for a better solution.

I'm thinking a better solution would be a PCM replacement along with the other "Fried" parts? But what do I know? heh

I agree, and normally I would do that right away. I just got this car because of an insurance loss and i've been a few bucks out of pocket, so the voltage regulator was the lesser of 2 necessary evils.

I would still love to know where I can splice a key-on 12v wire under the hood, though. I just don't know the car at all.

Agree. I just got the car. Someone destroyed my old one and I bought this one with the insurance check. The external regulator is working fine and was cheaper by about 200 bucks. I still don't know where to find a 12 switched source under the hood, though.
