99 intrepid 3.2 Ltr Coolant Temp Sensor Location

Hello All;

Took the car to Pep Boys, and they said the Coolant Sensor was bad, and it needed a new fan assembly.
I was able to get them both online together, for $102.00
My question is this.

Where is the coolant Sensor Location?
Some of the 99 intrepid's have it beside the Thermostat housing, but I do not think that would be the case here, as the thermostat housing is under the car.

A picture would be very welcoming.

Thanks, all.

Download the FSM.

This 2000 manual should be closest to your 1999

Garage
Coolant sensor is in the lower intake manifold next to water outlet where the upper radiator hose connects at the engine.

FYI, all of the 2nd gen engines have the thermostat at the engine coolant inlet - where the lower radiator hose returns coolant to the engine. As Dan said, the sensor is near the coolant outlet, which is where other engines traditionally have the thermostat. No thermostat there on our engines.

Pep Boys may be right that the temp. sensor is bad, but that would be very unusual. What are/were your symptoms? Were/are the fans not coming on? Did/does the gauge read high (above halfway) while the fans were/are not running? Was/is the coolant temperature actually high, and if so, how was/is that determined, and did/does the gauge read high at the same time?

What were the signs?
The Temp gauge was giving false temp readings, and when it finally went out.
My son's girlfriend stated that it went from Mid - HIGH when she stopped at the stop light, and the car cut off.
Had it towed to the pep boys, and they determined that the Coolant Sensor was bad.
And the fan, one of the fans stopped working.
Not sure if it was wiring issues or the fan motor.
Either way, just bought a new double assembly, and that will be in on Monday.

I have a funeral to attend of my best friend, I am leaving out tomorrow, and will work on the car on Tuesday.

The Thermostat is on the bottom of the car, beside the Oil Filter.
And I do not remember seeing anything that looked like the sensor when I swapped everything out.

I will take another look at everything on Tuesday.

The proof of the pudding will be after you replace the sensor. Perhaps the temp. sensor shorted out the entire sensor bus, which would disable the timing sensors. A rare event for that sensor, but possible.

Sorry for the loss of a good friend.

On that we are all in agreement.

As Dan stated, the sensor is *not* near the thermostat. The sensor is near the coolent the outlet on top of the engine.

They hid that blasted thing.
I tell you, I hope NOT to have to work on this car again. I am tired of it.

Got it swapped out, the sensor and the fans.
Drove the car, and it ran good, no issue, the temp gauge ran up to right below mid-way.

But, it is done.
Thanks, guys.
