2002 intrepid 42LE transmission noise

I have been hearing a buzzing noise when I shift from park to reverse, and from reverse to drive and sometimes from drive to reverse when the car is just sitting there not moving. The car now has 101000 miles and I noticed the noise for several months now. A previous post mentioned that this was normal and not an indication of further problems. But the car did not make this noise since I bought it new, just recently has been happening. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this noise and what was the outcome. I drained the fluid and replaced the filter at about 36000 and 62000 miles and it looks good. Thanks.

Ron - You sure about that? If this is the chatter you generally don’t hear (unless you’re really listening for it) if you’re sitting in the car with the doors closed but hear with the driver’s door open when you go from neutral to D or neutral to R, it’s normal noise from the PCM duty-cycling (dithering) the shift solenoids. I’ve always understood that it was intentionally programmed like that to ease the shifting into gear instead of a sudden hard clunk that would be heard and felt if a full non-duty-cycled 12 volts were dumped to the solenoids.

Both my Concordes did it with never a transmission issue in over 280 and 200 kmiles.

Or are we talking about a different noise?

If it’s the noise I’m talking about, it’s a non-problem.

If you don't have a CEL (Check Engine Light) or Codes then drive the snot out of it until it craps out.

Sounds like you've keep up with the transmission maintenance with regular Fluid/Filter changes so not much else to be done.

I had to have the dealer replace the Solenoid Pack on my 2002 300m Special(same transmission, same part) years ago due to a failure where it dumped into Limp Mode every time I got off the Highway. That was at around 80K miles and I'm at 150K+ no with no issues since.

It's a chore to get at the solenoid pack to replace it. Need to drop the pan and pull the Valve Body to get to it. I'd recommend buying a replacement Solenoid Pack to have on hand if you're really worried about it.

This Ebay seller has been used by members on here with favorable results. Around $50 shipped.

And the 42LE was used in all LH cars from 1993-2004. Only one transmission on all of them.

how much did the dealer charge you. There is no engine lite as of now. I was thinking of bringing the car to a parts store to see if any codes. I just got finished replacing the rear struts ( lots of aggravation), just ordered 4 new tires yesterday and now i am possibly looking a trans repair. I am good with cars but dont think I want to do this job. Last time they replaced the selenoid pack with a mopar rebuilt one That was at 36000 miles. I wanted new one but they said no. How much did the dealer charge for the part and how much for labor. One more question is it definitely the pack?

I'd guess a dealer repair on a Solenoid Pack replacement nowadays would be $1600+

I checked with a trans shop today and the owner said the noise is normal. It is indeed coming from the selenoid pack. The shop gave me an explanation, something to do with 12 volts coming into the pack. This guy has been around for quite some time so I trust him. I could check with a chrysler dealer for a second opinion. I am happy I dont have to deal with the pack, it would have been a pain in the *** to replace.
