Just finished 2000 mile trip But after shutting down and before the engine cools completely it starts rough and the last time wont start tries but just can get any revs
done this a few times before but always seem to start rough and clear up after 10 or 15 seconds
Help appreciated
1999 intrepid 2.7
Not sure if the 2.7 applies also, but the 98 to 99 model years especially with the 3.2/3.5 would vapor lock on real hot days or after a long drive.
Symptoms would be starts fine cold, but when hot if the engine is shut off and restarted it will either just crank or start rough and misfire for a bit and then smooth out.
Fix for that is a PCM update
Not sure if that applies here, just throwing that out there. Especially if you have no DTCs
Is this a problem of the fuel rail emptying out due to either leaking injectors or fuel pump check valve? Are you loosing any coolant on the possibility of a cylinder head gasket problem (not likely but possible)?
Stopped happening but we were stopping a lot with engine shut down and key on for radio charge phone etc for periods of time then leave car come back in 15 minuets wont start. best of my memory this is what I think was causing it
Any comments
Thanks for all the info
Having any Check Engine Light flashing issues under acceleration? That indicates multiple misfires which could be plugs or injectors. And also a Cam Position Sensor crapping out. Does your Cruise Control work normally? If not..again the Cam sensor.
Otherwise need to do a Fuel Pressure test for Leak Down issues. When were the spark plugs last changed? What's the mileage on the engine?
My first Intrepid was a 2001 RT, which I bought from the Wife of the original owner who had passed on. He had kept all maintenance receipts from new. At 27k miles, he brought it to a Dodge dealer for the exact same problem you have, hard starting when the engine is warm and then sits for a short time. Dodge dealer couldn't figure it out, he brought the car to multiple independent mechanics, they all did extensive testing and couldn't find a thing wrong. So when I finally bought the car in 2013, with 67k miles, my mechanic figured it out right away. An intermittently bad fuel injector. It would work properly at times, other times not, the only dead give away was scoping the combustion chambers, where he discovered one cylinder that had a nice and perfectly clean piston, which indicated it was being periodically soaked with gas.
*IF* it is due to one or more leaky injectors, sometimes you can clear the problem by putting a heavy dose of Sea Foam or Techroline in the fuel tank for a couple tanks of gas. That can dissolve residues on the pintle and seat of any offending injectors. That doesn’t always work, in which case, a more vigorous high-pressure bench cleaning process on the injector(s) may work, but a more sure-fire way would be to replace the injector(s). If it’s going to take a week or two to investigate other possibilities, it may be worth trying the Sea Foam or Techroline as the cost and effort is relatively small - will do no harm and will have side benefits of doing other cleanup work, such as valve, piston, and head deposits.
