Crazy Idea!

Ok. I currently have a 98 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2L that's running fine. I was really thinking about selling it because I wanted a RWD manual car. Well, what if I bought a Intrepid for around 500-600 and converted it? It will cost me some good money but it will be my project car. What kind of engine and transmission should I put in? I want it to be fast so I know breaks and suspension will be upgraded. Also, if I took my car to a shop to get it converted to RWD and manual, how much would it be? If I did it myself, how much could it be? I know there will be people that say dont waste your money but Ive had 2 Intrepids already and Ive really loved them. Thanks!

Agree with above two comments. This comes up often and will cost more than 500 or 600 dollars more like 5000 or 6000 dollars minimum to do.

Ya. I understand it will cost a lot. But it will be one of a kind so I will try it. Its not like im having to pay people for labor so it will be a little cheaper

I think there's one or two out there that have done this mod, sadly I recall one having a chevy 350 for an engine although I'm not sure if that one ever got completed.

It's been done a couple of times I guess.
No idea how successful it's been.

You can google: "intrepid rwd conversion"

There's a bunch of stuff there.

I agree with Ronbo. There are better things to spend your time and money on!

There was a thread somewhere about putting an LX rear train into an LH body, with a 41RLE tranny...
Did this go somewhere or was it only a dead end btw?

I looked everywhere online for a manual Intrepid and RWD; I couldn't find anything. So what car would you guys suggest. I want something I can fix up. I plan on buying something cheap w/ maybe blown engine or what not.

The possibilities are endless! The automobile industry is over 100 years old.
There's plenty to pick from.

Have you ever watched Fast N Loud on Monday nights on the Discovery Channel.
They are in business to fix stuff up and they don't give a shit what make or model it is.

If you want a rear wheel drive car, start with a rwd car. Get a late 70s Dodge Dart and
put a hemi crate motor in it. Start off cheap and put in a rebuilt 318 or a 340 with a
thermoquad; that'll lite the tires up.

Or you could do like Demondeac and DodgeBod did and turn a 3.5 into a 4.0.
(That'll run $8000+ easily)

There are tons of unfinished projects out there that can be picked up pretty cheap.

And, of course, there are always more important things in life than these damn cars!

Lol. Ive never welded in my life. Exactly why it will be a project car or I can get someone to teach me and just pay them to show me. Since I'm 17, I Don't think I can buy one. Right?

I've figured to do the swap right with an LX hemi, you're probably looking at upwards of $6-8000 for the project. Trans tunnel raised, electronics swapped gas tank moved, rear suspension swapped, custom front cradle. It would be a sweet project for sure. But if you've never welded and only have a few bucks to your name... move on. Not a project I would suggest for a newbie unless you have an experienced helper.

You're 17 right? What are you studying? Have you ever rebuilt an engine before?
Maybe you could start with that... I'm not judging you, I'm a computer engineer ;)
That's just how I started ^^ I leart a lot rebuilding my first engine (Alfa Romeo 156, 1.8 TwinSpark 4 cylinders engine).

It may be off topic but... I remember you started a thread on how to speed up a Trep, right?
If you are looking for high speeds, LH cars are not designed for speed... Acceleration is OK on LHs, Intrepids have been police interceptors for two years! But you can't achieve high speeds like 150 mph on these cars mostly because of the gear ratio.
Moreover the 42LE tranny is not efficient compared to modern ATX.
You may be able to gain a bit (bigger wheels, lower transfer gears ratio, maybe another differential) but keep in mind you'll be reducing power and acceleration.

Off topic again ^^
French cops used to drive Subaru Impreza WRX (are they RWD btw?) for a while (they crashed 54 cars on the 78 they had), now they have Renault Megane 3 RS which is a FWD. Both are fast! The Megane can go up to 158mph and develops 256hp but I don't think you can get it in the US ;)
