So, It's Time I Have To Make Some Hard Decisions Between My Mopar Family. I don't Want To but I Have to. Between My 2 300M Specials, Dodge Intrepid ES and My Newly Acquired Magnum R/T, (On top Of My Other 2 GM Cars) I'm Forced To Get Rid Of Some Of Them, So I Decided To Start With The Trep And One OF My GMs.
So I'm Looking To Do some Overhaul On The Trep, Before I Hand It Over To A New Owner. The Car Runs Suprisingly Good For A 176K Miles Car/Engine, Although It Burns Oil and Blows White Smoke Upon Start Up And Blue Smoke Engine Is Warmed Up (Only At Start Up) But when The Car is Running It Doesn't Smoke.. So, Since I Been Had New Water Pump, Timing Chain And Guides Kit/Set Laying Around For Years, I Figured I Use it to Refresh The Trep. I Also Got A New PCV Valve to Throw In It To Hopefully Address The Oil Burning Issue. (Assuming The Oil Burning Is Not Piston Ring Related)
When I Got The Car About Early Last Year, The Engine Bay Was Dirty, The Previous Owner Never Cleaned It. But, Something That I Found Strange Was The Airbox Had Like A Good Amount Of Yellow Milkish Deposit All In It (Part That Connects To The Throttle Body). But, The Oil Looks Good, No Sludge In There. The Oil Cap Had Some Of Those Sludge Looking Deposits On It Too. So that Led Me to Believe it's The Oil Vapor And PCV System That's Causing This Sludge Like Deposits. Even When I Changed The Oil, It Looked Good, It Didn't Look Sludged.
I Had to Change The Whole Dash, It Had a Minor Front End Collision That Deployed The Airbags. I've Done Cooling System Flush, Changed The Coils And Spark Plugs, Air Filter And Some Other things Here and There.
So, I Wanna Ask To Get Some Additional Guidance On what else to Do While I'm Getting Ready To Embark On This Journey. If I'm Going The Right Way/Doing The Right Thing And Also What Else Can I Do To Make Sure I Do A Good/Proper Overhaul??

Looks like it ran thru some water, deep puddle--etc---hopefully not a flood---was enough water to get thru the air cleaner---and it mixed with the oil residue in the air intake pipe----check PCV valve and hoses too; could be bad;

I agree that the sludge is moisture related - could be PCV issue. A lot of short trip driving could contribute to it, not giving engine time to heat up much and bake the moisture out.

Oil usage may be PCV also, but also could be bad valve stem seals - common problem on the 2.7 above 100k miles. Time consuming job to replace the valve stem seals, but if youíre going to do it, do it when replacing timing chain and water pump.

Bad piston rings is very unlikely.

Yea, I've Already Got New PCV Valve Ready To Go. Oh Wow, Deep Puddle? Ok, That Makes Sense, Cos In The Trunk Is Like Mold Like White Stuff On The Carpet And On The Foam is Sort of Soaked, I Was Thinking That Something Spilled in The Trunk, But Car Being in Some Kind Of Flood Makes Sense, (Guess I Should've Ran A History Check Huh?) But, Great Point, Dan You Really Know Your Stuff Man.
That Should Explain Why There Was A Broken Spark Plugs In One Of The Cylinders When I Got The Car, Wow....

I'm Hoping It's a PCV Situation Only. But, Valve Stems Is What I Never Even Thought Of, I've Never Done It Before, I Don't Know Much About It, But, I'll Have to Do Some Study On That. If I Have to Do The Valve Stems To Solve This Oil Burning Issue, I Don't Mind, Since I'm Gonna be Tearing Almost Half Of The Engine Down Anyway, I Might As Well. I Want The Car/Repair To Come Out Right, Plus, That'll Make Me Get A Lil More Money On The Sale, 😊.

Ooh Boii! So, Where Can I Find A Video Of The Valve Stem Seal Replacement? Or A Good "How To" Write Up With Photos Of Doing It? I Understand I'll Be Needing Some Special Tool To Unload/Remove The Valve Springs And Another Rope Trick Of Holding The Valves Up To Keep Them From Falling Down The Cylinders.. ? 😡🙄

Good call on the possible flood situation, Dan. I hadnít Thought of that, but itís a known thing to watch out for when buying cars.

ImpalaWitMe - Valve stem *seals*, not valve stems. With 179k on it, it is likely. You could do a thorough PCV restore and see if still the problem, but since youíre going to be doing the other work, you might as well do the seals at the same time.

Cams will have to come off. Old school valve spring compressors wonít fit into the tight spaces around the valves, but many modern engines have the same crowding around the valve springs, so there are now choices in spring compressors that will work. You can get what are called overhead ďone manĒ valve spring compressors, but some like traditional compressors but compact to fit the tight spaces are available that cost a bit less.

Without some tricks, keepers can be difficult to remove and install. Use a magnet to remove the keepers with spring compressed. When reinstalling springs, put grease on the keepers to stick them in place before releasing the spring.

Hey everyone!! Long Time!! been working on all cars at once. So I got to doing the Intrepid, Trying to see if I can get her running again. 2 Weird, odd and worrisome things I found that's bothering Me and need advice on.

(1). When I took the valve covers off, I found there were cakes of crude around the bolt Looking things (Possibly Head bolts) in the cam/rocker areas and on the outer portions of the valve-train areas.. The photos was after I cleaned/Scrapped them off. You can still see the other crude build-up that I hadn't cleaned up. Was dirt getting in there some kind of way? Maybe the Valve cover gasket was Weak... ? Or something bad/worse?

(2) Problem: In the Cyl #4 Plug hole was puddle of oil sitting in there, when I took the plug boot off, it was soaked with Oil, So I thought maybe the spark plugs backed out, So, I took a spark plugs socket to see how tight it was, it was tightly snug, didn't feel loose. When I took the spark plug socket out of the hole, it was soaked with Oil too, almost half way up the socket.

Who knows what's going on on here? I Sincerely that hope there's No cracks around the spark plug thread/area. (Since it was determined that it's been in a flood or at least was driven through water, causing the broken spark plug that I found In the Cyl #6 when I bought the car). The rest of the cylinders seemed fine, no oil in them, Just that #4 Cyl. Perhaps I should perform a compression test to see if any of the cylinders are compromised... ??

I was able to get the photos to upload.

Please Help/Advice..
