Trans Question

Hello to all old and new!

I havent dropped by for a long while, especially since my old Trep that my son was driving fianlly gave up the ghost.

Anyways, shame on me for not knowing this already, but does the Intrepid trans change it final drive ratio by swapping ring and pinion, or is there a gearset at the back of the housing where the shaft goes back up to the diff?

My Grand Prix trans uses a chain drive on one side to swap ratios, so I was curious if the LH trans was similar (not transverse of course)

I've looked at a couple of Trep R/Ts and 300M Specials lately, but I've read that the 3.89 final drive hurts the fuel mileage. I know trading off acceleration is not done very often, but the 28mpg I've beengetting on my 3800 GP has spoiled me a bit. That car isnt gonna last forever and I still love the Treps and 300Ms better than the newer Chargers/300.

Anyone done this mod?...or better yet what kind of fuel mileage are you getting if you have an R/T or 300M Special?

The LH transmission uses a chain and gear set.

You can swap the 3.66 (I think that's the ratio) to 3.89 if you like fairly easy, don't even ahve to remove the transmission from the car... but if you want to go the other way, I think you can swap the gears the other direction for less pep, but better mileage.

Your speedo will be off by 7% though.

if I remember right, the tooth count is as follows

33:32 for 3.66
34:31 for 3.89
32:33 for a little bump in economy
31:34 for a bigger bump in economy

I dont know anyone personally who has done the economy swap, but it has been discussed and theorised before. I don't think you run into any clearance problems, and I am pretty sure the input and output shafts have the same spline.

I've test fitted the "economy swap". In my 2nd gen transmission the splines are the same, but when you swap the two gears, they don't end up in the same plane. One would need to have the hub ground shorter and one would need a hub spacer. Also the chain snubber may need to be modified because the angle wouldn't be the same.

The ratios would be:
Ratio Change* (Speedo)
3.66 0.0% (show 60, go 60 = same)
3.89 -6.4% (show 60, go 56, low)
3.44 6.0% (show 60, go 64, high)
3.23 11.6% (show 60, go 67, high)

* From standard 3.2L ratio

Thanks for all the responses guys, all of which confirmed my thoughts on the idea.

I would also assume that to purchase the gearsets from Mopar aint exactly cheap.

Any input on the kind of fuel mileage anyone is getting with the 3.5HO?

a bit off topic, but I just gotta say that while I have been browsing around the site, there are some members here with some boss-azz rides. I always thought the 2nd gen Trep was one of the sleekest sedans ever built, but a few of you here have turned them into some potent looking machines.

I especially like the late model Charger deck spoiler and wheels that some have installed. A few I even recall seeing at Carlisle last year (I was there with my Sebring vert)

Keep up the great cars!
